NEW YORK (AP)—Derek Jeter(notes) and Lou Gehrig are tied at the top.

Jeter matched the New York Yankees record for hits with a seventh-inning single Wednesday night against Tampa Bay. Jeter’s third hit of the game gave him 2,721 in a Yankees uniform, tying a mark held by Gehrig for more than 70 years.

I was sadder when Cal Ripken Jr. broke Gehrig's consecutive games record. The one significant record that he holds (and will for a long time) is the AL record for most RBI in a season (184). It's amazing that he was able to bat in so many runs hitting clean-up with a slugger like Ruth hitting in the 3 spot.

Ruth led the league in  OBP in 1931, so alot of those RBI's were Gehrig driving in the big tub of lard.

They couldn't pitch around Gehrig, either: They were going to get Lazzeri, a HoFer with a .339 average, or Bob Meusel who was .309 lifetime.

Imagine your 5 and 6 guy hitting over .300!
