We've been through it so many times the "survival guilt" has pretty much gone away. It doesn't seem like "if" anymore, but "when". I've already had discussions with my folks that it's no longer a matter of who's doing a good job vs. a bad job. It's just a management decision that someone has to go. I only have 2 guys left working for me now. My boss advised me a couple of weeks ago to start thinking about which one would be tagged if we have to do it again. Then again, it could be me instead.
Sorry about your friend. It's not so bad if they're given a voluntary opportunity, but when it's forced, and out of nowhere, it sucks.

A couple years ago we went through the same thing, massive layoffs. I was the newbie and thought I was gone. The kept everyone in my group except the 2 screw-ups. Over time though they moved people to the point we are now paper thin, having just enough people to do the job, and god forbid some one takes vacation. And management still thinks we are fat.
Hang in there. If you do you could always open a liquor store.

I'd be on board with that Fuzz. It is a great idea. I'm pretty sure our inventory turns would be great. Unfortunately our revenue may suffer. FWIW, a few of us are going out this afternoon to mourn/celebrate the fallen.

I've been on both sides. One of the company's I worked for bought another. I was in charge of the re-org. I had to lay off dozens of people and shut 6 offices. It was one of the worst things I ever had to do (with the exception of eating raw, fighting gamecock-but that's another story).
On the other side, a few years later I was "downsized". Wound up being a godsend. I missed most of my kids lives growing up since I was on the road 2-3 weeks a month. I swore I would not do that again. Started my clubmaking business and haven't looked back. Making about a third of what I did prior but have never been happier. My wife and kids like me a lot more too, which is nice.

Pauly's has better looking barmaids so it'll probably win out.

All right. I'm outta here.
Apologize in advance if I am online later and offend anyone.
Well, not really, but it felt good to throw out there.
