AT&T can't be overly pleased with this

Teen untethers iPhone for use on other networks. Including overseas.

I'm guessing the online forums he and his buddies frequent are just like Golfhos. Only different.

Hotz collaborated online with four other people, two of them in Russia, to develop the unlocking process.

"Then there are two guys who I think are somewhere U.S.-side," Hotz said. He knows them only by their online handles.

It was only a matter of time. AT&T had to know this. Either that or they're incredibly stupid.

NEW YORK (AP) -- A teenager in New Jersey has broken the lock that ties Apple's iPhone to AT&T's wireless network, freeing the most hyped cell phone evar for use on the networks of other carriers, including overseas ones.

AT&T doesn't care about overseas.  No worries there.

Roughly 0.003% of American iPhone users will feel strongly enough about AT&T to take advantage of the hack.

Apple will address the hack and block it in a firmware upgrade.  Hackers will have to choose between their love for Verizon  Disgusted and having their iPhone bug fixes / feature updates.

Non-story other than pretty decent fodder for the legions of Apple haters.

It'll be interesting to see if Apple blocks this in their next firmware upgrade.  They've been surprisingly good with their updates so far in that they're not blocking the existing hacks and playing a cat-and-mouse gamein each update with hackers like Sony does with the PSP.

Still, I can see AT&T putting pressure to close this hole as soon as possible.
