Stadium Noise: Cheating?
« on: September 16, 2007, 09:55:51 AM »

With the recent video spying, and every attempt at advantages, I wonder about home venues.

For years, Minnesota has enjoyed a bit of home field dominance.  Closed environment.  Very loud crowd, music, etc.  Tough for opposing teams to hear signals, forced to silent counts, etc.

Different than an outdoor open stadium of say:  Raymond James, FedEx Field, Arrowhead.....

The Queens have lost that mystique over the last few years, but I know every attempt is made each home game to make it as tough as possible for the visiting team.

The other teams are aware, and prepare for it, but what are you thoughts?

Tough noogies?  Regulations?

This isn't a knock on the Vikings or their fans, but having been to the HHMD for a Twins game, I would think they deserve any advantage they get for having to play there...I didn't like it at all.  Again, not a knock, just an observation.

Agreed.  The HHHM is a terrible baseball stadium.
(except that we have those big fans that blow out when we're at bat, and in when they're hitting. Grin )

I guess I should have mentioned that in football configuration it may be totally different.

Yeah.  It was definitely constructed football first.  It's an ok/although outdated football stadium.
I've seen 1 game there.  I had more fun in the parking lot.  Should have stayed out there.  Wink  Stir the pot

And it was loud.  Buffalo beat us in overtime.  Cussing  Randy didn't want to play.

On Sept 4 I was at a Twins game.  Don't get out to them very often anymore (used to go a couple times a summer).  Anyway, that Tuesday and also when a went a few years back, I actually thought that both games were rather quiet for games at The Dome.  The crowd isn't as "into" the game.  Wasn't much noise at all; not even during the rally attempts which would be considered weak at best.  It was in the 10th inning before it seemed that anyone was there to pay attention to the game.

I don't mind the HHHM; actually, I like it.  I think the layout is a bit bad, but other than that I don't have much against it.  What I'd really like to see, though, is a stadium with a retractable top.  That ain't happenin'.  It's rather sad that the team that has been insistant upon asking for a new stadium - the guys that make millions - doesn't want to chip in much for it.  Let's let the fans pay for it, even the ones that don't come very often, and even the citizens that don't attend any.

I do agree that an outdoor stadium definitely give a different perspective to the game, though.

Is the noise cheating?  Well, I guess part of the answer depends on what you think of closed stadiums in the first place.  I guess after it hits a certain degree, it could be.  All games have noise, though.  It's just some places are louder than others.

Never really given the noise much thought before, so guess I'm a bit undecided.

fake noise (speakers), yes.   legitimate crowd noise. no.

Yeah, that was actually my angle.  Crowd noise you can't control, but I'm not sure the hosting venue is regulated at all on ambient/support noise/music.  I could be wrong.

There we go.  That does seem like a good defining line.  I knew there had to be one if I thought hard enough, or someone else thought about it.

Is it something the team is doing, or is it just part of the fans' exuberance towards their team?  I mean, you the team (the Twins in this example) can't control the fans (and what team in their right mind would ask their fans not to cheer them on?), but there *are* things they can control.    Are they using it towards their advantage to distract the other team?

Nothing says "this is a tough ass place to play" better than belting out Rodgers and Hammerstein tunes.
