I wonder how much WD was paid off by the RIAA.

DMCA aside, WD has partnered with an authorized copyright warehouse/vendor and implemented a safeguard to prevent copyright infringement acts that you yourself condemn.  And you have a problem with it?

My issue, unless I misunderstand it won't allow even over my internal network at home. I don't agree with P2P file sharing. Just my opinion.

Then perhaps one of you computer-literate folks can explain exactly what it does and does not block?  What sorts of things would a person want to do with a particular file that this device would prevent?  (I'm probably just too far behind the times to get what all a man can do with a video file.)

The example I think of is... I have my iTunes library on an external hard drive and I can access it from any computer in my house via my little network. If I understand this correctly, that would cease. I would have to store it locally on each computer, doubling the HD space it takes. The trouble (again as I understand) is it can't differentiate between internal networks and external.

Yeah, yeah.  Just trying to point out that there seem to be some specific requirements before the blocking is invoked:

Don't know what "on a share" means or how the MyBook distinguishes "different" users, but they do seem to be something above merely one guy trying to access his own files over his own network.

if i buy the hardware (to do so), and i have mp3s i legally obtained,  i damn well better be able to move them from pc to pc on my internal SAN (not really a LAN!)  .  what is the point of having a netoworkable (HOME!) pc hard drive other than to share media between boxes?
