the wonders of modern medicine
« on: July 06, 2008, 05:08:55 PM »

my mom calls mid day yesterday, never a good thing, they never call except for on my birthday i call because i have free long distance. my mom will be 80 next month and my dad turned 85 last month. as soon as i see the name on the caller id i assume one or the other is dead. my mom had a stroke in the winter and my dad had a heart attack almost 30 years ago and several  Air quotes minor problems Air quotes since so we are always expecting the worst.

so anyway back to the call. mom says dads cardiologist sent him to the hospital on Thursday to get some tests done, she didn't know exactly what  Roll Eyes they started the test and then immediately rushed him in to surgery and did what i have to assume was an angioplasty, again mom has no clue even though the doctor explained exactly what he was going to do  Roll Eyes. when i last talked to him he said he just had a stress test done because he had been feeling really lethargic and weak. turns out he was basically working on half a heart due to the fact that one side was completely blocked and the other side partially blocked. the doctor said he was ready to drop dead at any moment. so they kept him over night and sent him home the next day.

i asked to speak to him she said he's out mowing the lawn  Shocked they told him to go home and do what he normally does. he said he is like a new man and he feels like he's 60 again.

he has out lived any male in his family by 26 years they all died of heart related problems.

just thought i would share. Smiley

Very nice.  If I could buy 15+ more years with my mother up to her elbows in flower garden dirt I'd pull the wallet right now.

Tell your dad that feeling like 60 doesn't mean your mom will take kindly to him chattin' up the neighbor lady.  Wink

I know the feeling. My dad is under watch for heart related problems (family history, bodes well for me) but he is doing fine. I have that fear that one day the call will come.

It's good that things worked out Ok.

I think my MIL is scheduled to have the same procedure done. She always seems tired whenever the extended family gets together for dinner and such.

I always wondered if the tiredness thing was hereditary, but I guess not.

Maybe she just doesn't like going to your house for dinner.

my dad was to the point where taking the garbage out he had to stop and rest. i'm not saying he won't drop dead tomorrow, i'm just saying it's less likely now.

hope all goes well for your MIL. Smiley

Thanks. I'll be surprised if she's out of there the very next day like dad was though.
