We're in Kansas City last weekend visiting friends and enjoying their succulent and impressive BBQ, when we need to take a break from meat. I know - it seems unimaginable to me too; but after two days of nothing but ribs of all varieties, pulled pork, brisket, and a leaf thrown in for purely aesthetic reasons - something else is needed.
So, we head to the new Power and Light District in KC. A pretty nice collection of bars, clubs, restaurants, etc. The 'Living Room' is an outdoor area that connects a lot of the places, and is a huge bar in its own right (dubbed "KC Live!" or something)... which means IDs checked for booze purchasing rights.
This I have no problem with, until I see the devices they are scanning the IDs with. The newer Missouri drivers licenses have a bar code on them, this wireless device was scanning them. I double checked as I walked past after being checked and it really was just a simple age checking device - but the whole experience was a little too 'papers please' for me. People without bar codes were just checked like any bouncer would do, so it wasn't excluding people by any means - I just didn't like being 'scanned' to gain entry to a public facility. Too paranoid?
I also learned later that there is a dress code of sorts enforced. Certain color displays (gang stuff I guess), the 'below the belt baggy pants' look, no hats turned at an angle, etc. Now I'm really thinking WTF! The dress code stuff was all second hand knowledge and I never saw anyone turned away - but, whatcha all think?
