Seriously: Never read a book of his I liked. I should LOVE him. Like Mailer, love Pynchon, Updike not so much.

Still, I won't say the fact that I didn't really get his work means he is any less than a literary giant of the past century whose passing should be noted with great sorrow, and a question:

Where will the literary giants of the 21st century come from, or more specifically what medium will they work in?

I haven't seen a really good AMERICAN novelist come along in the last 25 years.

The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life. -- Teddy Roosevelt
