I just want to take a moment to publicly honor my grandma
« on: February 02, 2010, 04:58:17 PM »

Today she celebrates 90 years of life!  When she sees her cards and gifts, she doesn't always believe us that she's 90... 40 or maybe 60 - and that's a BIG maybe - is more like it.  But that's okay. And when she does believe us, she laughs and says she doesn't feel 90. And that's a good thing.

90 years is a long time... and yet it's not.  I don't know about you, maybe for you it is. But for me, especially lately, time seems so short.  My dad used to talk about how the day would just fly by, and sometimes for me the day would seem to go fast, but not like he would say.  And when we would talk about it, it would usually end somewhere along the lines that as you get older time seems to move quicker, and someday, someday, I would see what he means.  Still, I would wonder if time could really seem to move that much faster.  Now, I'm beginning to see what he meant.  Not long after my birthday, I realized just how old (and yet so young) 24 years is.  I'm 24.  My dad is 50.  In 2 years, I'll be exactly half his age.  As it is, I'm almost halfway to 50 myself, and a full third of my life is gone!  Where has the time gone?  There's more I've been thinking, but it would make this quite long. (Well, maybe I'll make a post an entry on my blog... That's what they're for, right?)

Anyway, I just wanted to share this special day.  She means a lot to me, even though I don't always express it well. Smiley

What's with the "third of my life is gone" nonsense, young lady? You have well more than 2/3rds of your life yet to experience. Make those years count!

Thanks, dys!  It's pretty special to have her still with us.

The 1/3 nonsense was upon the assumption I live to the average life expectancy. Last I heard it was 72 years, although I admit I haven't kept up with over these last few years.  A little searching says it's closer to 77 in the US now.  Anyway, I plan to live as long as my Lord lets me.  I don't know how long that's going to be - it could be a few years, maybe many decades, or possibly just a few more days.  I hope that it's a long time, but I don't know if it will be.  I am trying and will continue to make the most of today, for Him.

(I don't drink near beer, either.  I'll have tea, please. Smiley)

Happy Birthday to your Grandma!

X2

Time does indeed fly.  I can remember feeling much as you described above early in life.  Now, I think and look back and I can't believe I'm 40.  I feel like it was a few weeks ago I was 10.  Playing ball, being a kid.  I seems like just days ago that Karen threw a big party for me turning 25.  Big 1/4 Century.  Now I look at the guy looking back at me in the mirror and ask how did we get to 40 so fast?  "It truly seems like only yesterday."

I will tell you the biggest one for me and the true gauge for me on how time has flown by is Maddie.  She will be 12 years old in a couple of months.

Twelve years.  Has it really been 12 years since I drove her home in my truck on that June day?  That tiniest of bundles.

Twelve years.  I've never held the same job for 12 years.  I've never owned a car for 12 years.  I don't even have clothes I've held onto for 12 years.  12 years is longer than the Queens' NFC Conference Championship appearances.

But I digress.

Where did those years go?  I know each and every one, and will always cherish fond memories of each and every day, but man;  It went by so fast and I'll say it again it really seems like yesterday.

I'm misting up now, and it makes me miss her terribly so I'll close with another congrats for your Grandmother and go grab another beer.
