Seize the Moment

I know Philly Mick is a HOF lock and one of the best of his generation.  Stipulated, given, no args, so on.

But...

With Tiger out of commission leaving Mickelson supposedly as the best injury-free player on the planet let's take a peek at how he is doing.  Two wins on the year leaves him by my calculation in about fifth spot for POTY behind Woods, Harrington, Perry and possibly Kim.  As of right now he's T42, ten strokes back and moving the wrong way in the Barclays.   In the majors he was T5, T18, T19 and T7 - respectable surely and outstanding for many/most players but pretty weak for El Numero Dos.  Since mid-June he's played three times prior to this week.  That's three tournaments in two full months with the biggest obstacle to his dominance (short lived as it may be) sitting on the sidelines.

Sorry, a big time champion has to want it more than that.  Phil seems content to go down in history as Andy North or Julius Boros rather than Lee Trevino or Tom Watson.  I don't get the guy at all.  How do you get that good without the fire he seems to be missing?  Is he simple that talented?

By the way, yippee-skippee on the whole hanging with the family thing.  Sorry, I don't buy that even a 20 tournament player spends less time with his family than any of us do ours.  That leaves 30 weeks a year where he's practicing close to home with a few weeks of endorsement/charity obligations thrown in.

I've got to agree with you on this one, UB.  I've turned it over in my head every which way, and the only conclusion I can come up with is PM needs to throw caution to the wind, and go ahead and have that breast reduction.  You very rarely find a big breasted man with any kind of fire in his belly, and I don't think Tour golfers are any different, do you?  It's the whole self image thing, and it can't help the balance, what with having to swing around those things.  A couple of gals had it done in my office, and they couldn't be happier.  Who knows, dropping down a couple of cup sizes might positively influence whatever hormones cause him to walk around the course with that crazy, vacant grin, even while he's throwing up on himself out there.  It might even be the thing he needs to get him even closer to his family, especially his wife, if you know what I mean.
