Collinsworth WTF????
« on: November 22, 2007, 07:48:20 PM »

he just said .3-.4  seconds  equals  6-7 yards for the average NFL player.
 Huh?

2.0  forty huh ?   5.0-5.5 hundred huh ?

All the announcers tried too hard to sound intelligent. If they would just be normal they would probably be much better.

There's a big difference between how long a player takes to cover 6 or 7 yards from a dead stop and how long it takes him if he's already moving at speed.

of course.

and that said, the fastest sprinters in the world cover the last 90 yards of the 100 in less than 9 seconds, more than 8.

he's saying the average nfl player is WAY faster than that (and that ignores start up issues)

Most sprinters are still accelerating at the end of the 100.

yes....  and...

i also remember posting a couple years ago about how michael johnson's 200 record probably featured the fastest sustained burst in  video recorded track history....   and doing a numerical analysis on it....

...that said...
how does this support collinsworths claim ? Devil (that an average nfl player in full pads, helmet, etc  can keep up a sustained pace faster than world class sprinters ? )

{
johnson did the last 100 m  of the 200m (record) in 9.2 seconds, which is about 11.9 yards/second.    collinsworth claim  high/low ends.  7 yards/.3 second  = 23 y/s, 6 yards /.4 second  = 15 y/s    average = 19 y/s ... 7 yards/second faster than arguable the fastest recorded sustained run in history....
}

It doesn't, but then trying to disprove what he said using 40 yard dash times wasn't exactly on target either.

I'd like to see a break down on what an NFL receiver or corner can actually do in full pads on a 20,30,40 and 50 yard pattern before I just dismissed it out of hand.

of course the 40 time is a bad comparison, but it's a metric tons of nfl guys throw out as a measure of speed, (he's a 4.4 guy  blah blah)  and even a 1st pass glance ignoring start up times(1 second would be a good guess)  should have crossed his mind before he opened his mouth  Devil.   just extrapolate it to 100 yards, and he should know that nobody can return a kickoff in 5-6 seconds  Devil

that said, i remember a long time ago  neon deion sanders  super highlight reel  pick where he covered about 9-10 yards (impossible to measure exactly on a 2d screen) in 1.4-1.5 seconds or so (they didn't have the fancy clock graphics on the screen back then)  from a dead stop  to jump a pick.  and at the time he was head and shoulders faster than anyone else in the league.
