Football referreeing question
« on: November 01, 2008, 05:58:35 PM »

how do officials train to learn how to judge where a horrible punt flies OOB ?
I think this would probably be one of the hardest things to determine , wouldn't it be ?

Not sure if this answers the question but.....

There is a referee (A) behind the punter who is specifically tasked with:

1) roughing the punter call
2) tracking the ball

Once the punt is away he watches the ball. If it goes OB you will see another referee (B) walking up the sideline looking at (A).

(A) has an arm raised and when (B) gets to the point on the sideline between where the punt started and landed OB, (A) drops his arm and (B) stops.

Yeh, thanks Fuzz, I know the process, I'm more asking how you train to learn the depth perception of it when it's a really* bad punt

I can't help you there. I've always assumed it's an "educated guess" anyways.

From all of the NFl I've seen, aren't all the referees Senior Citizens??.... They all appear to be over 60..
