LOL @ MAC OSX / UNIX argument Well, I guess if you're gonna get technical then, no, OSX doesn't yet have Single UNIX Specification certification..... Nor does Linux.

Sorry about that. That's my fault. He said something about logging in as you and cranking his karma up to 1,000, and I thought he was serious. So I put a minus sign in front of his karma, so that any self-bumping of his own karma would just be digging a karma hole. Since he never did it, I took away the minus sign.
lol, I wouldn't do that.

I thought it was rather funny that he went into the negatives. I'm sure you did.

Torp wouldn't actually sign in as me though unless it was by accident (sometimes I'm on in his user or he's on in mine), he does have some sense (even if it's just a little bit - j/k, Kev).
However much it is, it's more then you have.

What should I get?
No, it's not vague.

I guess I might be considered a bit of a super user but... Defragging HFS+ volumes is essentially unnecessary plus OSX does a great job of defragging on the fly with delayed allocation and such. Killing an unwanted/hung app is as easy as hitting command-option-escape. Killing an unwanted process admittedly can be much more difficult if you don't know what you're doing. You're a *nix user at that point. Of course, figuring out which task to kill in Windows is no simple matter if you don't know what they all do. Sixes really. The funny thing is that in spending 8-12 hours per day on Macs the only thing I ever have to kill is MS products. Based on what you say stroh I think OSX with its bundled apps (iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, iDVD) might be a good fit. Those apps are first class and for some strange reason rarely get consideration in the PC vs. Mac price comparisons. They're worth a few hun under any standard. There's one point that can't be disputed no matter how much of a Mac zealot one might be. There are *far* more software options available for use on a PC. At times there simply isn't a Mac version of the software you need. That's more of an issue in a work environment though. Most if not all of the home stuff is out there for Mac. Now... where's AZCowboy to tell me Mac OSX isn't Unix. I have my POSIX links handy. Stroh, Last year I ran screaming from Windows, and got myself an iMac G5 (PowerPC chip). I couldn't be happier. Like Uisce, my older son is a bit of an expert when it comes to Macs (he owns an all digital commercial photo studio). Maintenance is not an issue. Your .tiff files will open with Preview, a program bundled with the system. Most, if not all, of your Office files will open under AppleWorks, and Office for Mac isn't that expensive. Plus, if you are really masochistic, you can run Windows on the Intel Macs. Go for it, Ted

Stroh,
If you go for the iMac, let me know how it feels when you pull it out of the box and realize that the whole computer is not much bigger than the equivalent LCD monitor.

Ted, that's funny! That's what started this whole thing. I was at Costco and walked up to this 24 inch Apple "monitor". I thought, cool, nice! I grabbed the mouse, and started playing. Then I "looked" for the "computer" part. LOL I finally found it. tres cool!
