The speech started with a glaring historical error:
Only 43 men have taken the Presidential Oath.
My faith is shattered!
This is true, isn't it? Unless Chester Arthur was really a woman. I think his point was BO said 44, and while he is the 44th Pres only 43 people have served as pres-- Cleveland's non consecutive terms and all that. That's it. I declare a Jihad on him! LOL.... I reckon that's first golfhos Jihad of the year

Did he actually say "44 men have taken the oath" or did he say "44 times a man has taken the oath"? In the latter case, the number would be correct. If he had said "whiteys" instead of "men", he'd have been wrong in either case.

Had I knowed (<--- eubonics is back in style!!) you were liveblogging this, I would have joined you.
All in all, so good on too many levels. Glad I took the day off.
During the oaths, I couldn't help but think the only thing the President really swears is to defend the constitution.....not our buildings from terror loving terrorists. Just that wonderful piece of parchment, and of course, everything it represents.
Interesting also how the VP has to swear additionally that he is not crazy or under control of aliens. Cheney appears to have gotten away with it on a technicality, because he IS an alien....whereas Bush has no excuses. His was a complete FAIL.
It's my understanding that the position of POTUS is the only one that requires an oath as prescribed by the Constitution. It's plainly obvious that Justice Roberts's misplacement of the word "faithfully" was an attempt by the right wing to further illegitimize Obama's presidency--as if his being a foreigner weren't enough. Some may argue that he was simply trying to avoid splitting an infinitive which I try to steadfastly do myself. Admittedly, I've been known to occasionally break this grammatical rule.

He said '44 Americans have taken the oath', etc, etc, etc. I'm not sure Roberts misplacing of the word 'Faithful' has much to do with anything.

So help you God? This is the wingnut intervention right here. It's not in there, so there's NO reason for Roberts to ask. *goshdarn* WINGNUT lawyers (unless they're working for the betterment of former pinups).

Huh? Reports say that phrase has been used since George Washington's oath; at least first heard in Chester Arthur's oath.
(There was a lawsuit brought by an atheist group, seeking to ban the phrase from the oath. It failed -- Obama has the free speech right to say it, as does Roberts to ask it. Plus, it's ceremonial, FFS. Get over yourselves.)

Au contraire, mon frere:
Roberts job is to give the oath. The oath as written doesn't contain the phrase.
If Obama chooses to add the phrase, that's one thing. Robert's asking the question is something else.
Don't disagree that it's quibbling, but when future SCOTUS Justice Hillary Clinton omits it, the hue and cry will be heard far and wide.

If you're taking the position that the oath doesn't include that phrase, then Roberts' "job" is completed when he utters "... defend the Constitution of the United States." After that, he's "off the clock" = free speech.
What's comical is that people are complaining about whether or not Roberts can ask "So help you God?" ... while Obama is standing there with his hand on a Bible, one that he has personally selected and had to obtain special permission to have present. One wonders: does it soothe the atheistic breast if, prior to the swearing-in, Obama had asked Roberts to ask him the dreaded question?

Hillary is even less qualified for SCOTUS than she is for State.
But that's well off-topic for this thread.

Assuming that the oath hasn't been completed until Obama affirms it (I do, so help me god), how is Roberts off the clock?
