Could have knocked me over with a feather when this was announced over the loudspeaker at my local dirt track this evening. The gasp in the crowd was audible, a collective 'Whhhhhaaaaaa? '. As far as I know, NASCAR's program is at at illicit recreational drugs more than 'roids. I would have guessed Junior or one of the Busch brothers would have been the first to run afoul of it. I'd also guess that Junior is never randomly tested.

The real beauty of this is that he was apparently using a banned over the counter medication that's a sponsor on Carl Edwards car.

LOL, Mayfield is getting ready to sue the *feces* out of the brain trust in Daytona, from what I hear.
Seems he was taking a prescription medication that's also used recreationally that's on NASCAR's 'Banned Substances List'.
That sounds fine, until you realize that nobody but NASCAR knows what's actually on the list!

The *feces* just keeps getting deeper: http://sports.espn.go.com...cup/news/story?id=4235324LONG POND, Pa. -- NASCAR filed a countersuit against Jeremy Mayfield on Friday, accusing the suspended Sprint Cup driver of willfully violating the substance abuse policy, breach of contract and defrauding competitors of earnings.
The suit stated that Mayfield knowingly participated in sanctioned competition using a combination of drugs in violation of the substance abuse policy that he agreed to follow.
"And in doing so violated his contract with NASCAR and the standards of care for other drivers," NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said from Pocono Raceway.
Mayfield was suspended on May 9 for violating NASCAR's substance abuse policy after failing a random drug test taken a week earlier.
He then hired Charlotte, N.C.-based attorney Bill Diehl and made charges against the governing body ranging from defamation of character to discrimination against someone with a disability (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).
Mayfield's attorneys argued in an open court hearing, in which they sought a temporary restraining order to get the driver back on the track, that Mayfield's positive test was the result of taking Adderall prescribed for ADHD and Claritin-D for allergies. Sounds like plenty of lawyerin' work to go around in the Charlotte area! Does Clive have a piece of the action yet?

I'm just guessing here, but I don't think meth is usually prescribed for ADHD. http://sports.espn.go.com...cup/news/story?id=4245969NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield tested positive for methamphetamine during a random drug screening May 1 at Richmond International Raceway, ESPN The Magazine has learned from two independent sources.
In court papers filed in the past two weeks (Mayfield sought a temporary restraining order to return to the track; NASCAR countersued), it was revealed and acknowledged by Mayfield that he had ingested a double dosage of over-the-counter allergy medication Claritin-D immediately prior to the Richmond drug test.
He also revealed that he was taking prescription Adderall-XR, which the racer claims had recently been prescribed by a physician to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
However, a third drug came up positive during the urine-based Richmond test and had not been previously identified. The name of the drug in question has been redacted from court documents and was not specified by either Mayfield or NASCAR because of the conditions of a May 29 gag order issued by Mecklenburg Count Superior Court in North Carolina.

I'm thinking Adderall and Claritin D MIGHT trigger a false positive for a street drug usually cooked up from either.

Interesting read, that: Following the May 1 drug test, Mayfield drove his Toyota Camry to a 31st-place finish at Richmond the following night, completing 371 of the race's 400 laps. As part of the drug-testing procedure, he was asked to reveal any medications he was taking in order to avoid confusion during the analysis.
Mayfield said he informed the on-site testing administrator that he had taken two doses of Claritin-D within a short period of time prior to the test.
On May 3, Mayfield talked with Dr. David Black of AEGIS to inform him of the Adderall-XR prescription. According to the lawsuit filed by Mayfield against NASCAR and AEGIS, Black "expressed doubt that someone of Mayfield's age and experience legitimately needed to take Adderall." And who the *fudge* is he to even make that comment? Because Adderall allows people to "hyperfocus" and continue to participate and concentrate on heavy physical and mental activity for long periods of time, it has been listed as a performance-enhancing drug in much of the sports world, including the NCAA, MLB and the Olympic governing bodies. NASCAR's list of banned substances has not been released publicly. It hasn't been released to the competitors, either, which would seem to be an issue.

Federal Court to NECKAR: Suck IT!: http://sports.yahoo.com/n...amp;prov=ap&type=lgns CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—Two months after a positive drug test for methamphetamines, Jeremy Mayfield is getting ready to return to NASCAR.
U.S. District Court Judge Graham Mullen on Wednesday issued a temporary injunction to allow the driver to get back behind the wheel at Daytona International Speedway this weekend.
“This is huge for us,” Mayfield said. “This means more to me probably than any race I’ve ever won or anything.”
Concluding the “likelihood of a false positive in this case is quite substantial,” Mullen said as he ruled in Mayfield’s favor after about two hours of arguments, including NASCAR’s contention that Mayfield is a danger to the sport after testing positive for high amounts of a dangerous, illegal drug.
The whole thing is *goshdarn* ridiculous, and I say good for him. The damage done to his career is immeasurable.
