Tahoma rocks. For some reason, I'm using Futura-11 for my editor.(just for programming, no printing) I switched to it a while ago and never bothered to try anything else.
I went through a Times New Roman phase in the late 90s when I did a bunch of sites/logos in it. It was a dark period and I was deservedly mocked for it.
You're able to look at code in a proportional typeface? That would really bother me. Doesn't bother me. Bothers me. Monaco ftw. Seriously, how do I delete that font ? Why do you have it in the first place? AFAIK it doesn't ship with anything but OSX. What's wrong with it anyway? Are you a fontist?

You're able to look at code in a proportional typeface? That would really bother me. Yeah, it's a new thing for me on this laptop. Now I remember why I switched to Futura. In the past I always just went with the default fonts (Visual Studio, Eclipse, etc.) because it makes an easy transition when looking at other peoples' machines. But I made a mistake and got a 13" laptop. I usually don't maximize my editor, so I'd run into situations where the code would run off the screen. So I kept trying different fonts until I found one that was sufficiently narrow and readable.

It took quite a while to get used to looking at. One of my machines @ work is a Mac.

Verdana for email, Arial for documents that get filed, Times New Roman for contracts ('cause my boss likes TNR). I'd go with this, mostly for what I could "express" with it:
