Ball?
« on: June 23, 2009, 08:48:50 PM »

I never used to play any type of premium ball.  I'll be honest with you, I thought and felt that any average hack that I played with that spent 3 to 4 bones per ball to play a blah blah blah was; well to put it politely, wasting money.

I've made some swing changes this year.  Playing some kick ass golf so far this year.

I have played (from balls I've found)  Titleist Pro V1,  Nike Tour One.  Rounds I have played with these 2 brands and models of ball.....well, I have noticed a difference in performance.  Both from me, and the ball.

Anybody else?

If you've been playing proV's since they rolled out, and say I won't play anything else....That doesn't mean anything to me.

Have you seen a measurable difference in a particular ball, over some "off the rack rock flight"?

I'm considering actually dropping coin on a box of one of these.

I've played a lot of different makes/models.  Primarily, I'm looking for a ball that doesn't spin much off the driver, so I can find it and play it again.  After that, I want a decent feel on/around the green.  I don't need ultimate checkability, which I can't capitalize on anyway, just a good feel.  I ended up with the ProV1x, although there are other premium golf balls I haven't tried yet.  $27.95 for top-quality used golf balls!

Do you fall back on Top Flites for the back nine?

Well it's all in my head now.  I didn't play any kind of premium ball today, and absolutely played like *feces*.

Except I played the last 5 holes* in 2 over on 2 bad putts, because I just didn't care anymore.

* last 5 holes(out of 32) with 1 fairway and 2 GIR.

I dunno.

I love it when you speak of gorse.  And call me pet names.

I don't notice or acknowledge much distance difference between the various balls. The separation and preference for me shows up on approach shots, pitching and chipping. I've preferred the "premium" balls for this reason. That said, I just purchased a dozen Bridgestone e5's because of some reviews, and their advertising that they promote a higher ball flight. Cool.  I have been intrigued by the new Bridgestone ads as well.  I was actually thinking of finding one of their fitting deals.

With the availability of 2009 Taylor Made TP Red & Black at Walmart and other outlets for 28/dz, one can't go wrong.  I like the Black for early season/cool weather golf and the Red for warmer weather.  They are much like the Pro V1 (Black = softer) & Pro V1x (Red = firmer) for  playability.  Reverse the colors for older TM balls.  I have found them to be very durable.
