What development platform do you use? Java in Eclipse?

Cocoa/Objective-C in Xcode

Man, Objective C has some ugly looking syntax.

Yeah, it's pretty wacky.  I look at it as a good way to keep the number of developers/competitors low.  Otherwise there'd be much more than 56k apps in the appstore and 15k publishers.

Although ease of language isn't everything, considering many more people know java, and the Android Market only has ~5k apps last I heard, and they let anything in.  The Pre will be interesting since it opens it up to anyone who knows ajax/javascript/html.

Xcode is a fairly weak IDE overall.  Especially given its age.  I've been using it for close to a decade and Eclipse is a welcome respite.

Objective-C is a B+ or so.  Cocoa rules.

Wow, fmtouch is a $70 app.  Shocked

Hey, after you get your phone, if you're looking for an app and can't find anything to do what you want (of the 56k apps currently), let me know and I can write one for you.(assuming it's somewhat simpler than fmtouch)

Or if you find apps that are close, but not exactly what you're looking for, I can make something based on your specs.  That goes for all of you here with iphones (Spanky, stroh, Teed, UB (that is, if you don't roll your own)).

I think it'd be fun to collaborate and make an app together here on golfhos.
(I've been kind of on the sidelines for the past year with family health issues or I would have suggested this sooner)

Cool offer!  Too bad my imagination of app creation will likely be limited by...my lack of imagination...

Got my phones yesterday (my wife's desire is what spurred my initial interest).  I had mine for 24 hours before taking it back and swapping for a new one.  White screen of death after 1 call and setting up MS Exchange email.  Prick store mgr. was not going to exchange it due to Apple determined policy ("once it is out the door, you MUST contact Apple.").  I sat in the corner of the store on the phone with AT&T Customer Service until I could get someone with just enough authority to ok the swap.  Great service from the store sales/customer svc and corporate customer svc.  Just a stupid asshat of a store mgr afraid to make the right decision.  Dip *feces*.

No comment on all the programming language discussion.  WAY over my head.
