Saw my first International friendly tonight!
« on: August 05, 2009, 10:45:47 PM »

Seattle Sounders/FC Barcelona.

Man oh man, I never thought I'd see 60 to 70 thousand screaming rabid fans at a soccer match again (quick sidebar...flashback...1978 or 79 New York Cosmos/Seattle Sounders, Kingdome, 60,000) it was craaaazy tonight, the bug has hit this town again hard, of course it helps to have a team in second place and setting league attendance records. But that's neither hear nor there.

I had no delusions that we would win, or even really hold our own, but I wanted to see a world class team up close and I did, and boy is it a different game. This just in, Barcelona is really good, you have to be really good to be able to wear salmon pink shirts and socks. Even with Henry advancing in years he still has game and Lionel Messi scored two goals that were pretty damn good.

4-0 Barcelona, but the score was really secondary to the atmosphere, we think there were 67,000 people in the stands and it was as loud as I've ever heard for a football game (there is a reason why we lead the league every year in opposing teams false starts)  Wink.

Now for some whisky (or whiskey) and a little whack for my daddy oh, and we call it a good night.

Cheers!

Ps. Uisce would have been proud of me, I don't have an official anything with the Sounders colors on it...so I wore my Ireland team jersey.

I think that's one of the cool things about Bill Russell, I've actually seen him on one of the local golf muni's around here. One thing to know about Bill Russell (if any of you ever run into him Wink) NEVER ASK FOR AN AUTOGRAPH. He doesn't give them to anyone.

Atta boy Seamie.    Buddies

The Sounders are a GREAT story.  Love it.  But I do worry for your safety.  In 1990s Seattle it was an offense punishable by seventeen rounds of bastinado to declare ANYONE but Gary Payton the greatest defensive player of all time.   Shocked Wink Cheesy

Nope. Bill Russell plays muni golf, which is pretty cool since he could be a member at just about any of the swanky private clubs in the area for the asking.

Instead, he waits his turn in line just like all the regular joes.

He plays a regular 4some or 5some at Maplewood every Tuesday. Maplewood isn't exactly Bethpage, if you get my drift.

As far as the Sounders: The USL Sounders were very, very successful. The stealing of the Sonics didn't hurt either.

You mean the selling out of the sonic's to the highest bidder then bitching about them going elsewhere?   Grin

I had never heard of whiskey in the jar and had no idea on the reference.
