quit living in the boonies Ironically, if I did, the network I'm on would matter less to me since the coverage would be *feces*ty across the board.

That's the typical response from an iPhone apologist when defending the crappy coverage of the AT&T network. I don't care if there's an iPhone app that gives me a massage with a happy ending. It's useless if your car breaks down on a rural road that has no coverage, and there are huge holes in coverage on the AT&T network even in a highly urban area where I live. I'd consider the iPhone if it ever came to the Verizon network (and they'd put in a slide-out keyboard ), but there's no way I'm ever going back to AT&T.

Really? A pissing contest over cellular carriers? I had AT&T years ago. As I recall, except for some inexplicable dead spot in my kitchen, the experience wasn't terrible. I migrated to Verizon because my work migrated to Verizon. Honestly, I find the differences between the two carriers in terms of service to be negligible. Verizon's phones suck ass, though. (I'm also on my 2nd warranty replacement for my LG Dare. ) I'm definitely not the type to jump carriers just to get a particular phone, but I do think the iPhone is cool. I doubt AT&T can maintain an exclusive agreement with Apple indefinitely. Even if they do, I think some of the new offerings, while not having the cache or ****-appeal of Apple, will be able to reasonably replicate the experience. Hopefully Verizon has figured out that adding a touch screen is not all it takes.

I didn't expect to hear that, Aske. Then again, I never expected to get one myself. Sure enough, as Dys and Uisce advised me, typing would become a non-issue in short order. Surprisingly, I find myself 2-thumb typing at least as fast as I did on my BB. A welcome - and non-sought-out benefit was that my thumbs were starting to hate the BB keys, really feeling it.
For me and my wife, we've both loved the change - not just the fun factor either. For us, it is a great work phone.
As for coverage, Verizon is wonderful. I switched to T-mobile 3 years back, though, as Verizon had a DEAD spot at my house. Having gone through all 3 now, driving all over Georgia, Alabama, and northern Florida, I have not seen much of a difference at all. I listened to Pandora on the iphone an entire 7 hr. trip to Orlando, except for a 2 mile stretch without coverage. It was the same 2 mile stretch not covered by the other two, either...

so some clarification:
we've been long term ATT users, never had coverage issues (though I will admit their map is sorely lacking if you're NOT in major pop centers) --- and don't anticipate being in an area anytime soon with coverage issues. as long time users, we qualified for certain discounts and upgrade eligibility perks (although getting them in the store was a hassle while online it clearly stated we had them??). When I get off my lazy butt (hopefully this weekend) and register, we also get significantly better ATT-based discounts through work association than through any other provider. So with that said, we were upgrade eligible, and pretty much locked into ATT for price reasons with no coverage needs they can't meet. Well, there is the iphone, and there is the blackberry... when you're only shopping ATT. They both had +'s and -'s in my view, but the iphone as a whole seemed a better deal than the similar priced blackberry. I was also almost instantly sold just based on the sidebyside difference in screen size. I'm certainly not a fan of the lack of flash support.... get this fixed ASAP apple!!!!! HATE!

I bet it'll be a while, assuming you're talking about Flash support within the browser. It's obviously important to Adobe, but I doubt it's a priority for Apple. Adobe announced you can now use Flash for developing a native app, but each app has to include the Flash libraries, which will seriously bloat your app. Here's a quote from one of the iphone dev mailing lists I'm on: Adobe did some tech talks on this at the MAX conference, and they were pretty candid about it. Right now, I've got a Flash game on my RAZR that seems to run about twice as fast as the same game ported to iPhone, and the filesize has gone from ~100k in Flash Lite to ~9mb on iPhone. Exported Flash app bundles contain a monolithic 8+ mb "library" file, so they hit the 10mb OTA ceiling pretty fast. (Adobe specifically said "'Hello World' is 8 megabytes", since this question was coming up a lot by the second day.) (Off-topic: When I saw this thread title, I thought you guys were going to announce an impending baby. )

GEEZ LOUWEEEZE. Wife's 4 yr old verizon phone was still working but battery wouldn't hold a charge. I went all out and used her time with V and got a free $30 Samsung. I dumped my Sprint plan and joined her plan and purchased the same $30.00 Samsung. Couldn't be happier. I can read the numbers and my fat fingers hit the right keys.
