http://news.yahoo.com/s/a...e_us/us_army_sikh_soldierServed with a couple of Sikhs who were forced out over what is basically BS. They take that *feces* very, very seriously and are very, very good at it.

On one hand good for him, congrats and thanks for the service. On the other (and I'm sure I'll be corrected, out argued and put in my place quickly so I'll slowly dip my toe in the pool) I don't know that I'm totally down with that. Disclaimer: I served. U.S. Army 87-91 Desert Storm. I had to cut off my long hair. Now I'm not claiming or comparing what I had is anything close to the Sikh deal, but my point is the reason I had to do it as did everyone else is uniformity. That is to say if you want this; this is what you have to do. I'm not sure how I can see an exception. Kinda like the women wanting a driver's license in a Burka. (that may not be the correct term) This deal: At some point it doesn't seem right on at least some level to some one. How do you reconcile it?

By recognizing that the psychological beatdown and reprogramming doesn't have very much to do with the physical appearance or gender of the beatee. The burka thing bothers me as well. We have to draw the line somewhere.

Actually, yes. They go with a subdued color, and then a helmet on top. It's just not a big *goshdarn* deal.

Ah. I'll take that response. And agree. This quote bothered me: "We're still working toward a day when Sikhs don't have to check their faith at the door," she said. But I have to check my G-N-R t-shirt at the door because it's "not the uniform". Regardless of how much it means to me. I see your thoughts, however. And agree to a point.

Your GNR shirt isn't a cultural touchstone that's been worn by untold generations for centuries by some of the finest military men on the planet.
Just sayin'.
Is it a really cool one, or just some WalMart bull*feces*?

I understand that. But that's not the point. Deer skin, war paint and feathers?

Back door edit. Real deal. Concert tour issue. Capital Center. Washington D.C. Skid Row opened. Missed a fair amount of it in the parking lot over some "business dealings". Also got turned around at the door on a random "pat down" searching for smuggling in contraband. We all looked like this: Can't bring your own booze in. Who knew?
