First full round since the boy was born

I don't suspect I have to tell any of you how hard it is to get out on the links when you have newborns/babies/toddlers at home. Especially when you're trying to convince your wife that she should stay home with them while you go play golf for 5 hours.
Anyway, my brother made a simple request to me: for his 40th birthday he'd like to get me, my other brother, him, and my dad together for a round of golf. For old time's sake. How could I say no?
Long story short: it was horrible. But not as bad as it could have been. I ended up Xing out three holes. But otherwise put together a pretty solid round. I even parred three holes, though to be fair all of them were one-putts. Mix in a few bogeys, a few more doubles... and, well, three holes that must not be mentioned, and I felt reasonably good about my game. You know, after not even swinging a club for two years. Especially on one of the tougher mountain courses Utah has to offer.

Awesome! I've been playing a fair amount. All over the place. Front side yesterday was a disaster. Same as you, took X on 3 holes. Would have shot 50 something. *fudge* it. Back side: Back to back birdies on 2 and 3, and two missed par putts inside 2 feet (*goshdarn* playing partner/competitor getting in my head on those because we had money on the line) and I end up shooting a back side 38. Stupid ass game.

Wow, two weeks ago I played the first round since the girl was born.
Bachelor party round in the DC area, borrowed some clubs. It was about as bad as it could have been. I was struggling to even make good contact. Three of us were so bad that by the back nine we ended up playing a 3-man scramble against the groom (and STILL lost!)
Still, it was good company and fun to get out again. I suspect I won't play again for several years.

A couple of weeks ago I played in my work's charity golf tournament/ scramble. My team posted a tie for 2nd place at 59 (13 under) at Valley View Golf Course in Layton, Utah. (Usice Beatha (pour some out) would know that course well. If he were still here I'd brag about eagling number 9, though only my drive counted in the mix in that one.)
I sank a couple of pretty decent putts, only contributed one drive to the mix, and hit the sand shot of my life (plus the putt) after complaining about not wanting to hit out of the sand. All in all, a descent round of golf. Maybe I'll play again before this time next year.

We haven't played a real round basically since this thread ended. Where we lived from 2013 to 2020 the only nearby affordable option as an executive par 3 (with 18 holes). I think I took driver out 1 time when there was a 50 mph headwind into the longest hole.

I think I went to a driving range 5 years ago. I keep trying to get the kids into golf, but no luck.

Since I wrote this I've likely played 6-8 rounds. Each consecutively worse than the one before. I still enjoy the game, and wish I actually had time to play, and someone to play with. I have a friend who keeps trying to get me out, but I think he's good, and that's not the motivation it used to be.
The boy just turned 11, and he gives zero *feces*s about golf.

Whoa, 11!! I think I can picture him as a baby (with great hair!) My oldest just turned 13 and is about to pass mom in height.

I remember golf. My 12 year old still has great hair. Still gives no *feces*s about golf. Taller than his mom, almost taller than me.

The boy is now 13. He's taken up a sudden interest in golf. I'm working on getting him some clubs that are not mine (still rolling with the Tom Wishon 770 CFEs and the Adams woods), because I remember what I did to my dad's clubs when I was younger. I have a friend who has offered up a free set of "30 year old Pings that are still in pretty good shape." I haven't seen them yet, but I'm guessing they're probably Zings or Zing 2s. Which are honestly sort of money. I'm kind of hoping he has a rad old Ping putter that I may swipe and give the boy one of the crappy ones I still have lying around.
Just when I thought I was out, they drag me back in. Cheers former friends.
