Can Chat Indicate How Many Are In There?

In the banner across the top of the pages, can the "Chat" link have a parenthetical to show the number of members in it? I seem to remember another site that does that.  |

It can. It takes an addition to the code.
dystopia and I spoke about it a couple of weeks ago, he had been thinking about the same thing.
My experience with chats that have the (0) is that people never bother to pop in.
The alerters with this chat make it so you can go in chat and stay there, to be told when someone else joins.
Both ways have pros and cons, this is a small site with a healthy chat fetish, it might work here.

My approach would probably be to enter Chat even if it showed "0" at the time, then rely on the sound-alert feature. I'd find it nice to know in advance if anyone else was in there, even if they were only "there" after their own sound-alerts. But I can see how a "0" might ward some people off, though ... If it's more likely to turn people away than get them to click, I'm fine with dropping the idea. |
