The ordeal is over (finally)
« on: February 02, 2007, 02:18:47 PM »

Laura (mrs. spaceage to those of you who haven't been following) has cleared her final hurdle. She took her NCLEX (nsg. licensing exam) yesterday and has confirmed with DOPL that she has passed and is a fully licensed Registered Nurse. Raise a glass.  Cheers

Maybe two.

Cheers Cheers

My mum's a RN on the last year or two of her career.  She's a DON at a small, private, friendly and efficient home health care agency.   Devil

It's getting tougher and tougher to find good nurses.  So she says.

Which agency?

My mom is also a nurse, but hasn't done clinical care for the better part of two decades. She's in administration now, and will confirm that good nurses are indeed tough to come by.

She worked at Applegate H.H.C. (SLC office) for years and years as DON.  She finally bailed after getting fed up with the most recent administrator who is basically a jumped up aide with, one must presume, some sort of connection.   Naughty

I can never remember the name of the place she works now.  It's right there in Bountiful though.  Small startup and Mum's just trying to get it established before she retires to her gardening.   Cool

Applegate is one of the better agencies around, they seem to do things the right way. Lots of grossly underqualified nursing administrators out there. We've had more than our share. They tend to wash out pretty quickly, but some manage to stick around long past their demonstrated uselessness. We've lost some very talented, not to mention tough to replace, clinical staff at the hands of terrible nursing management.

I can't possibly imagine why anyone would attempt to start up a home health agency in the current market (hugely competitive and very poorly reimbursed) unless it were for the sole purpose of providing hospice care, which is one of the few homecare services which receives reasonable reimbursement rates anymore. We have a hard enough time competing and we have the support of a huge healthcare system behind us. I've been here 5 years and I've seen literally dozens of agencies come and go. Hopefully they'll get it right, it's nasty out there.

There is a hospice side to the current place although as I said everything is just getting going.  Just between you and I and the internets I don't think they'll make it in the long run.

Mum's giving it the old college try though and trying to avoid becoming emotionally invested in the place.  She's just trying to position herself intelligently for retirement vis-a-vis social security and all that.

I was thinking the same thing.  It'd be like naming a sunrise after her, but it's the thought that counts. Wink

Is that a short joke?

Short jokes put me in a rage.  On the other hand, to think that maybe I'm not the only drunk halfling on the forum gives me a certain comfort.
