Had the same thing happen 5 years ago.  It wasn't as cold as it is now, but cold enough.  Came back from a 2 week scuba vacation in Thailand, arrived back home a day later than we should have on Super Bowl Sunday.  Walked in the door and it was down to 46º in the house.  $300 later it was fixed, part was all of $20, I now keep them on hand, igniters and flame detectors, that is.

Werd.

Last year, New Year's, our igniter went out. $200 for a $20 part.

I now own a spare.

BTW....Torp I hope everything is all right. It's too cold to be joking about this..when it happened to us at least it was about 50 degrees warmer than it is now.

Hi, all!  Thanks for the concern and well wishes.  It hasn't been the most fun 2+ hours of our life, but the furnace is up and running again.  This happened several years ago to us as well, and the guy who came gave us some bad cleaning "advice".  Anyway, after quite a while of recordings (hmm, I wonder if that's related to the "big game"?), we finally found a place that had an emergency line.  Usually they are service only, but they sold us the piece by itself.  So I just installed it, and we are up and running!

Ours also was the hot surface igniter.  The problem came about because we were told that we could clean it with sandpaper.  The guy we just got the part from said never to touch it.  So basically the part wasn't even working as good as it could have been.  Or it could have been so weakened that it would have broke in 2 in the middle of the night or something when it would have been even harder to find what we needed.  So it's kind-of good that it broke now rather than later.  Needless to say, we won't be "cleaning" it again.

Yeah, it was quite "cool".

Um, sure, I guess that makes me feel better knowing that some people are warm. Smiley

You take care of grandparents, feed Torpedo, find time to play chess with Aske, and you are a furnace repair-person.

Thanks.  The furnace became my job because I've got the smallest hands.  Well, that's out of those of us with an understanding of what to do.  I suppose Chelsea and Garrett have smaller hands (for now).

I enjoy doing things such as this.  I did a lot with my dad during my childhood years - and learned a lot.  And because my dad and I are so close, I've become fascinated with most types of repair and maintenance.

Kev just said the meteorologist said today was the coldest day in 3 years!  Well, technically, he didn't say that the meteorologist said it.  But it's on in the background so I know who said it.
