Dog owner question - treats, chews, toys
« on: February 12, 2007, 12:04:58 PM » |
|
There seem to be several dog owners here, I was wondering what types of treats, chews, or toys you (or your dog) prefer.
rawhide chews, kongs, plush toys, hard rubber toys? I was in Petco yesterday, and thought about trying something out of the normal rotation for my beagle.

Monte is an extremely powerful and determined chewer, even at almost 6 years old he will still chew for hours on end. We've only managed to find two things he cannot destroy: super heavy duty Kongs (black, not red), and Nylabones. He's got Nylabones we bought for him when he was a puppy. Granted, they're worn down to almost nothing, but they've been a great investment.
As for treats, he gets Milk Bones and jerky (we get the stuff Costco carries). We don't give rawhides or pigs ears or anything like that because he tries to swallow them whole and he chokes on them.

My yellow lab will play with just about anything, but for some strange reason, she loves these things: http://www.slingshotflyingmonkey.com/index.htmShe has the monkey and the duck, and will literally spend hours playing and grooming them daily.

My Lab loves rawhide and smoked pigs ears for treats. She also gets scooby snacks for daily treats.
She has two of the Kongs for playtime. Labs will destroy plush toys so my dog does not get any of those.

As far as treats go, good ol' milk bones, small ones, broken in half. I tried recently to change to some cheaper brand I fould at a dog health food store, I threw one to Ozzy...he spit it out and looked at me like I was F'ing kidding, the look on his face was priceless.
He also loves these rawhide bones that kind of look like cigars that we get from Costco, very healthy, haven't had any problems with them, sometimes you have to be careful with rawhide treats, especially pigs ears and the like.
Toys: he mostly destroys in about 8 seconds, but he loves stuffed bears, he'll carry around and lay with stuffed bears in some pseudo ****ual arousal love hate kind of thing for weeks, it's bizarre and yet fascinating, hey! he was neutured at 6 months, if he wants to carry around a damn bear and lay with it who am I to say, he's happy?

Our Westie likes wood (i.e. kitchen cabinets and baseboards) and her own *feces* for desert. She also likes all of the doggy treat options. I usually just grab whatever looks decent for a dog.

My dogs aren't really chewers, although the (younger) female will attack a stuffed animal every now and then. We've done Kongs, but usually by stuffing them with peanut butter, small Ken-L-Ration bones, and their dry food.
Both have a food allergy, the male more than the female. Treat choices are limited (or we give the "bad" treats in very small quantities). Most popular are Nutro chicken and rice bones, liver snacks, and various vegetables.

Oh yeah, Monte loves baby carrots. Or just babies in general, to believe all the talk.

Chickens....live. It keeps her fit while she's chasing them and healthy while she's eating them.

Monte's not fast or graceful enough to catch a chicken. Unsupervised children minding their own business, on the other hand...

Monte's not fast or graceful enough to catch a chicken. Unsupervised children minding their own business, on the other hand... There a HUGE surplus of kids in Bountiful, UT. Any Monte takes out probably won't be missed for quite some time. All in all, could save you money on Nylabones.
