My first Golfhos poll
« on: March 01, 2007, 09:33:49 AM » |
|
Had this discussion at work in regard to whether or not we should put a rookie employee in front of a customer. He gets his point across very well in e-mails but is sometimes uncomfortable to watch trying to talk his way through something.
Do you think you are a better speaker or writer?

Honestly, I feel pretty confidant with both. Perhaps a slight edge on writing, particularly since my mouth moves faster than my brain these days.

I am a fair writer, but an exceptional speaker.

It depends.
Expressing a thought, I can sit and type more flowing and lucid, than I can in speaking. I'm one of those "damn, I should have said ____". But when I need to compose something I can sit and take my time, and things come to me.
(man I'm gonna get slaughtered for that)
But, as far as "communicating". I talk to patients all day. I think I am well skilled at communicating with them. So I would say I'm a pretty good talker/communicator in that regard. Sometimes a salesman, when it comes to what I need them to do.

I am a better speaker than writer. It is easier for me to communicate more clearly by speaking than writing.
Face to face communication allows you to see your listener's body language to help tell whether or not they are following you. Which makes adapting to their style of thinking easier IMO.
I am getting better at writing but the people at my work would have to actually read their emails to notice.

I am well great at both but sometimes if I have to get my point across i would rather write it because i had onions for lunch or something but other times i'd rather speak it than write it because you can just say it and not have to type because i really don't actually write anymore because it takes too long and i can't even remember how to write in cursive writing which my daughter thinks is so funny because she does it but i can't even do it anymore! and she laughs so i definitely make clear concise points if i am talking works or typing but like i said not writing because you can't *goshdarn* read what i wrote its like that woody allen movie when he robs the bank and they don't give him the money because they can't understand the stick up note rofl! and so as you see i can write great but since i have to pick one i would probably pick the one or the other so ok i will pick writing.

For the last 2 years I have been working as my business unit's PSM coordinator. This requires lot's of technical writing as I am saddle with writing operating procedures and manuals, as well as re-writes and updates. I feel I am fairly proficient in that aspect of writing, as it is usually pretty cut and dry. However, away from there I struggle both verbally and in writing to convey my thoughts for no other reason then sheer laziness.

I prefer writing over speaking, but my emails often become very long-winded and end up being ignored. It bothers me when people reply to my emails saying "I'll just call you", so I often just disconnect my phone at work.

I'm superlative at both.
I can talk a venereal disease out of a west texas hooker, and my writing is often referred to as 'persuasive' by those who would know a little about writing.
