Smashed or not smashed??

If you recycle aluminum cans, do you compact them or not? Thinking about building a crusher that would last many lifetimes. Might even automate it. Possible air power.

I crush them. They take up less space that way.

Now, to answer your question. lol
When we frequently bought things in aluminum cans, we'd smash them. When we weren't jumping on them, we did have a small crusher that we used.

I usually crush the empty beer cans against my forehead. Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son.

Here in Iowa, they are worth a nickel apiece if they are UNsmashed and returned to a recycle center.
If you smash them they are worth $0. All cans and bottles here have a return/recycle fee attached to them.

I hate crushing cans. Luckily now we have a large, no sort recycle can. No more crushing cans, and no more sorting. It all just goes in one can. Life is good.
Plus, they hire some dude of TFT's ilk to sort it on the other end. How sweet is that.

So you get nothing for them? I haul to my local metal recycling place a couple times a year. Last time they were about 6o cents per pound. That can add up quite nicely. Even more so for those that consume a lot of adult beverages I am sure.

We did it for years. And I fall into that category, no doubt. It's just not worth the hassle. Big piles of bags, with cans, and then the trip. I know I'm literally throwing away money, but.....I do even more stupid things. I just give a little smile and nod, every time I throw the can into the recycle container, knowing Aske would be proud.

We don't get money back for empty cans over here. I remember when I was a kid, you would take your empty soft drink bottle back to the shop, and get like 2cents, which you would buy lollies with. No, I don't crush the empty cans, they go straight into the yellow recycle bin. (which reminds me, I think the truck comes for the reycyled bins this morning.)
