I enjoy good wine, but I'm not a wine snob - I will not pay over $20 for a bottle of wine (my brother wouldn't pay less than $20 a bottle, but he's a rich attorney).  The Gallo brand did a fine job of providing decent and drinkable wines at reasonable prices.  True, the company did market some awful products, such as the fortified "Thunderbird" for derelict winos, and its labor relations with grape pickers were sometimes dubious and controversial.  Also, Ernest and Julio's father murdered their mother and then committed suicide (not the most fortuitous of circumstances).  Still, Ernest and Julio's goal of providing good wines for the common people at prices they could afford was met.  That's a pretty neat accomplishment in my book.

I hear he went to the library and copied a wine-making method from a book.  He went on to be a multi-millionaire.

He knew a bad wine recipe when he stole one, that's for sure.
