I'm guessing someplace north of 'a lot' and south of 'outrageously expensive' as in, "I had the driver side power window motor replaced in my Mercedes CLK, and let me tell you, that was an outrageously expensive repair."

spacey,

I believe your gonna be looking at no less than a 1,000 bucks, if you just drop it off, and have it done. (little choice now days, I realize.)

The units themselves are in the 250-300 range, but the labor is intense.

The last time I had an oil change, the recommended an alignment with replacing some hardware.  It was well over 600 bucks at the oil change place.

Gotta go with Stroh on this one.  It takes some work and somewhat specialized tools to do.

I don't mean to sound too negative.... but that's why I intentionally don't own any vehicles with a strut suspension.  Way easier to replace just the shock absorber in a conventional swingarm suspension and it's a do-it-yourself job with shocks.

I'm seeing a fairly normal looking Monroe number through 2004, just FYI (not that I'd necessarily use a monroe, just that Napa Online was handy at home)...

I'll put a REAL estimate together and fax it to you...

FYI: it's a 1999.5 (2000) SE 4WD model. Info is appreciated.

I'll shoot from the hip, and give you a very, very good SWAG, which is more S than W:

109.95 per strut, prefer to use a KYB or similar...

3 hours of labor (this might actually be excessive, but I don't have a labor guide at home. I should also note that I RARELY charge full book time for struts) at 86.00 is:

 258.00

Alignment is 59.95 (and it's going to need a torsion bar adjustment, but most folks don't catch that)

537.85, or so.

Of course, the fact that they're noisy suggests that bearing plates might be in order, which would add 100.00 bucks or so a side, but that's PURE guesswork.

Why you wouldn't spend the extra 125.00 buck or so to get the rears done is up to you, but I'd prolly beat you up a little about it.

My next car might be the Dodge Caliber or Chevy HHR

but I gotta say I love how my current car (Honda Accord 97) costs me nothing.  Had radiator replaced for $110.   Grin  That's about the only major repair I've done and Ive got 156k miles on it.

Follow up: MFAWG was scary accurate in his SWAG. The total came to $542.64. (Though parts were slightly more and labor was slightly less.)

I asked the guy to do rear shocks too, but after inspecting them he assures me they are fine. I suppose when I request something and the mechanic talks me out of it at the price of his own bottom line, I have to trust him. Either that or he just didn't feel like doing rear shocks (or the breaks I asked him to inspect and replace if necessary).
