Nike Sumo 2 recall - nonconforming
« on: March 16, 2007, 04:01:34 PM » |

Saw this over on GEA. I don't recall a club ever being recalled due to conformance like this before. What a mess. Nike Sumo2 driver to be recalled http://www.golfdigest.com...uipment/20070316nike.htmlAccording to sources, Nike is instructing all retailers to remove the driver from shelves "immediately" and begin returning them to the company.
A source familiar with the document said that the document indicates that a manufacturing problem led to a number of the clubheads having "a conformance issue in regards to [spring-like effect]." According to the source, conforming versions will be shipped within a month and will have a circular sticker noting that it is USGA conforming. In addition, the source said, Nike will provide a website for consumers that will allow them to trade in their current Sumo2 driver for the new version.

Imagine the stick Sumo2 owners will catch whether they trade 'em in or not.
ROFLMAO.

the best part is our local corporate cacksucker monopoly, *8==>*heads sporting goods has marked them down from the msrp (and pre incident price ) of $499 to $399. gotta put the burden of dealing with the recall on the unknowing customer...

So will the "too hot" version now be a black market hit? How many people will keep theirs because they can pick up a yard or two? Would YOU return it?

I'd probably ask for a full refund. I wouldn't want to deal with the stigma aspect even though the "stamp of conformity" thing might be proof enough. Who knows. I just wouldn't want one in my bag. Most people don't care about the rules to the level I do. Nothing wrong with that. I don't mean that as a judgement, just as a strongly held opinion. I think someone who improves their lies or takes mulligans isn't going to have too much problem playing a hot driver.

I play in enough tournaments to want to avoid any questions about the integrity of my equipment. (It doesn't hurt that I have hit the Sumo and hated it). I expect most of us here would return it. My question was more rhetorical in nature. I do wonder how the golfing public will react to this. I wonder if Nike will publish the number of non conforming drivers that go unreturned and presumably remain in the bags of golfers.

My guess is the extra yard or two is under best case scenario analysis. Given the irregularity of my swing, my slower swing speed, etc. I can't possibly imagine I'd see any real benefits of a "hot" driver. (Even if I were to experience the miracle of an extra yard or two, what does one really get out it? I'm going to hit the same club with a 159 yard approach as I would a 161 yard approach.) Yes I'd return it.
Though, given the fact that I've never been really all that impressed with Nike's offerings, coupled with the fact that the Sumo 2 is one of the ugliest damned things I've ever seen attached to the end of a golf shaft, I wouldn't likely own it in the first place.

As per Yuse Yule, he said it better than I could ever compose. There is no way I could string together enough acceptable, center hit, drives to appreciate the benefit of a "hot" driver. And, as stated above, the 2 yards, ain't gonna do me *feces*. I would not want to have the driver for the stigma created on the first tee of every round.
