"Ol' Lady"
« on: March 20, 2007, 12:23:26 PM » |

OK, one of the biggest pet peeves of mine, is the usage of "old man" or old lady" to describe one's significant other. It has nothing to do with disrespect or anything like that, I just think it sounds extremely white trashish in a redneckish sort of way.
For some reason I have been bombarded with it's usage today, hearing it no less a dozen times from 3-4 differen't people, including this gem; "Hey, saw your ol' lady the other night. Me and Sherry's ol' man went to have a drink while we waited for my ol' lady to get her nails done. I asked your ol' lady where the ol' man was, and she you were at home."
So, to avoid any further stress I may encounter at work, I am taking a half day and going home...my ol' lady will be happy to see me.

I call Laura my ol' lady all the time, but only because it makes her mad.

Haven't heard that one in a while. However, I manage to cringe daily at someone's interpretation of english. And not just here

I used to publish a newsletter for family and friends; my fiancee-and-then-wife received a handful of new nicknames each issue. I'm prevented from repeating any of them here because she said something about pummeling me into a fine paste. But I am permitted to say that "old lady" was not among them.

I have gone the opposite route. I call my wife my young lady, or my 'lil 10th grader.

I will sometimes refer to my wife as "the Wife"...... but never Ol' Lady. After all.... we're both getting ol' together.

Kim is four months older than me, so "old lady" is an apt nickname.
