I think taking the average of all the #2s seems like a fair compromise.
I'm not sure what happens going forward, though, do Clive and 1puttpar get to pick replacements or keep going with the average of all #2s for rounds 2-4? (neither of these seems great)
I figured we'd run into a couple of hurdles this time. Hopefully we can evolve the format so it works better for the next major. (I'm not sure that picking an alternate would work out either unless you pick an alternate for each point level since you'd want the alternate to be the same point-level player)

Let me refresh everyones memory, and allow you for a moment to relive the pain of a burst testicle under the weighted foot, and smirking grin, of our dear barrister, in a recent contest. His undaunted prowess, and sly cunning abilities, slpayed they field, gutting all comers, leaving entrails, and widows in his wake. All the while boasting the spoils of the rape and pillage he perpetrated upon the GolfHos masses. To this day, he weilds the stolen septre with impunity. Due to his misfortune, in the latest turn of events, I suggest he seek equity in the fires of hell, and sleep in the belly of the beast. In short, retribution should find him in the form of: JACK SQUAT! 1puttpar can pick again. He's cool.

i think you should give them the average of any playing past champion over the age of 45

I don't know the answer. I typed something and then I read it and it didn't make sense.

There is no way that all 7 of our "guys" are going to make the cut. Wait until the end of todays round and we could look at things like cutting our teams down to 4 players.

Honestly I wouldn't think it too hard (in the future) to pick an alternate at each point level. Then again, perhaps if you pick a player who WDs, them's the breaks, and that's life in the big city. I could be persuaded either way, but I'm immensely susceptible to peer pressure. Mob rule and group think all the way for me!

Actually, I was thinking about this on my drive to work, and I bet we could get by with picking just one alternate with a restriction of the alternate needing to be a player with 3 pts or less (or something like that)
The point cap on the alternate would be to avoid the situation where someone can pick a 1 point player after looking at the starting tee times and seeing that this person isn't really going to play. Then they'd have their 8 point alternate ready to swap in.
