I checked out Of Montreal. I like it okay, but don't love it. It has that kind of organic feel that I like, but it's almost too polished, like they tried really hard to sound organic. The vocals have a bit too much sustained falsetto for my liking (though I said the same about Jeremy Enigk the first time I heard him and his vocals grew on me quite a bit) and a lot of the choruses are too sing-songy for me. Beyond that I found them quite listenable, if perhaps in smaller doses than an entire album at once. I'll definitely give them some more play time on the MP3 player to see if I am able to make an eventual love connection with them.

I hear ya.  I think it will grow on you.  It certainly is studio polished with many studio developed sounds but I like the psychedelic sound it adds.  I really like the lyrics as well.  I remember thinking this isn't bad the first time I listened.  Then after a few times through I couldn't get some of the songs out of my head and found myself compelled to reach for it again and again.  Tracks 3-7 are all amazing in their own way.  IMO many of those types of bands only dream of having a cd as interesting and good as this one.  Glad they at least peaked your curiosity.

BTW, have you checked out the new Kings of Leon cd?  So far I'm not too impressed.  And their first two have become mainstays on my ipod.

Negatory on the new Kings of Leon. I haven't heard much good about it and I just haven't made the effort to see for myself. I am pretty much in love with the new one from The Arcade Fire, though. I was also a bit late to the party on the new album from The Decemberists, (another of your recommendations, IIRC) but it gets better every time I hear it.

I've been digging on the new Decemberist album too.  My wife hates it though.  For some reason she can't stand his voice.  I like the unique sound of it and his songwriting style.

The Arcade Fire's new one is very good.  But as good as it is I still like their first album (The Funeral) better.

LOL.  I read Spacey's comment about trying out Of Montreal in the other thread and thought it was a restaurant.   Red Face

New music these days is A Matter of Life and Death.  Actually, my son bought it for my wife for Christmas.  Aren't 12 year olds cute anyway?  So it's been lying around and I threw it in the car early this week.  Good stuff.  Two thumbs up.

I've been meaning to check the new Maiden out, but haven't yet. (Thought their last was absolute crap though.) Now I'll look into it for sure.

I also like The Funeral quite a bit (wife hates it). They're one of those bands who never sounds the same from song to song, which is appealing to me. I like the same quality from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and TV on the Radio. Another band worth checking out, if you haven't already, is Bloc Party.

It's good.  Not as good as old school Maiden where there weren't any poor songs for six albums.  There are a couple worth skipping on this one maybe but, still, I recommend it.

The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg
For the Greater Good of God (* exceptional)
The Pilgrim
These Colours Don't Run
The Legacy (* I think)

Off the top of my head, these are the best tracks.

Haven't heard Black Rebel Motorcycle Club yet I'll check them out.  I've listened to some of Bloc Party's stuff and have been meaning to download them.  I didn't much like TV on the Radio when I heard them live.  They opened for someone I saw but can't for the life of me remember who.  Their songs seem very monotonous and never build into anything worth while IMO.  Their set was pretty lame because of that.  Kind of like an indie pop version of string cheese incident.

I suppose I could see that about TV on the Radio, though I would probably equate them more as indie free-form jazz than indie jam. Then again, I'm not entirely sure how I'd quantify the difference. lol.

I had high hopes for Maiden when Bruce *8==>*inson returned for Brave New World which, IMO, was as good as or better than anything they did in the glory days. Perhaps that's why Dance of Death was so disappointing. It just seems so weak in comparison. Then again it could be the completely lame cover art.

Sal likes the new one.  I didn't like anything after Brave New World.   meh.  their time has gone.

I don't have Brave New World.  [ shame ]

Not sure how that happened but on the strength of your recommendations I think I'd better pick it up.

I tend to live in the past.  I'd probably pick a "jump the shark" year no later than the mid-80s for almost all of my favorite bands.

When did "jump the shark" jump the shark?  LOL.

Oddly enough Of Montreal was the musical guest on Conan tonight. Sorta Bowie-esque, sorta gay, but I repeat myself. Odd to say the least.
