Because they probably aren't going going to vote for Giuliani, McCain or Mitt Romney, so they are up for grabs.

I'm going to guess that it's 200+ years of history. The list of Presidents who don't embrace the Christian God is shorter than the list of French war heroes.

'Stay Home' works for the Dems, but come to the realization that morality embraces more than 2 'Core Issues' (and relatively inconsequential ones at that) works even better.
Another factor is an increasingly disillusioned Left, notably in the area's of :
1) Economic Globalization. Dem frontrunner's Obama and Clinton are virtually indistuingishable from their Republican counterparts on these issues, and Big Bill was a Free Marketer all the way, to the right of BushI in alot of ways. The only Dem that stands out here is Edwards.
and
2) The 'P*ssy Factor' which reared it's head when the Democratic Congress knuckled under to Dummya's continuing escalation of the Iraqi Occupation.

I'm going to guess that it's 200+ years of history. The list of Presidents who don't embrace the Christian God is shorter than the list of French war heroes. No doubt, but I thought the primaries were the time for a huge swing to to the left and right (respectively) in order to win the party's nomination. Isn't it a bit early to run to the middle? I mean, I doubt many of the moral majority are voting in democratic primaries.

...the first hint that this is not your typical 'pander to the religious right for votes' is that Soledad O'Brien, not Christopher Wallace, served as moderator.
Personally, I foresee a schism forming in evangelicaldom....one not unlike that dividing Sunnis and Shiites.
When suicide bombers start disrupting Sojourner-sponsored events, things like reasoned dialog among presidential aspirants, peaceful demonstrations against the Iraq war, global warming and discriminatory and inhumane immigration policies, then we will have come full circle.

IIRC the Clintons have never been reluctant to play the religion card. Obama's played it a number of times already as well. Seems neither party has a monopoly on piety.
