well, so much for chicago...

being the intelligent, critical-thinking, problem anticipating, risk mitigating, genius engineer that I am, I was putting off doing all the call-confirms for flight/hotel/taxi/etc until the last minute....... because it was all done on my behalf from an organizer there and sent via email ... and I had a busy assload of meetings today... well, literally as I was sitting down to print the emails and make the calls, this evening lightning sent a surge through our file/mail server. machine wasted/ messages irretrievable. of course the *fiddlesticks*in thing was behind a $9.99 walmart surge protector from 1992, while I personally brought my own $40 modern one for my little workstation. looks like i'll definitely be jobless next month. i *fiddlesticks*ed over the 1 person/group willing to even give me an interview out of the 40-50 I contacted. .... and once you're jobless in this field, you're jobless forever since you fall behind on reading the journals/etc. (which no unemployed person could afford to subscribe to) on top of it, i'll get to reimburse them for the plane fare. yay. since the people there only gave me their work email and phone #,s there's no way to fix it unless one of them happens to go in on saturday and check their messages. hope I don't burn my fingers in the frying oil.

Aske: edit:
Are you SURE the drive is beyond recovery? It might be worth talking to a data recovery outfit. They are pricey but they can do some remarkable stuff.

I'm so sorry to hear this, Aske. since the people there only gave me their work email and phone #,s there's no way to fix it unless one of them happens to go in on saturday and check their messages. Does that mean that you did have their number somewhere but weren't able to get to calling them earlier in the day? Anyway, I hope that this still somehow works out for you.

Doesn't your email client store the data files locally?

Dude, hop into your fuel efficient vehicle, drive your ass to Chicago, and stay at a Holiday Inn Express. Your prospective employers won't have to know that you didn't take the flight that they paid for.

Heck, it's only a 7.5 hour drive according to Google Maps. I bet stroh's driven that long for free beer.

Seriously. Your driveway to hotel driveway, it's probably faster than flying.

thanks everyone for the well wishes and condolences....
well, it looks like it will work out , at least to get to the interview. one of my 2 contacts there did actually go in and check his messages today at work and resent me all the contact info on the lodging/taxi/flight etc.
got lucky break there for certain
i considered the drive/fly in yourself, but the issue is**** they go so far as to restrict facility access, etc... and getting in via a non-registered vehicle at a non-registered time can't be done-- at least not for a nobody like me.
as to another point raised- our mail system (since upitt only gives people 50mb uni wide network mail) was devised by our group advisor, and it is an antique linux network. so the mailsystem is only browsed through pine, and as such, there are no local copies of mail , unless you save them to your home folder and then take them out to your local machine from there .... (maybe microshaft mail server and outlook are useful for at least 1 thing after all.....)
