Name names or keep quiet, Sabbatini tells Gary Player http://uk.reuters.com/art..._GOLF/idUKB84331520070725 ALVESLOHE, Germany, July 25 (Reuters) - South African Gary Player should reveal names after suggesting some tour golfers were drugs cheats, his compatriot and world number 16 Rory Sabbatini said on Wednesday. Nine-times major champion Player caused a stir at the British Open last week by suggesting at least 10 players on the professional circuit used performance-enhancing substances. However, he refused to identify any culprits. "If you're going to say something, don't say half of it, either be quiet and let things be or spill the beans," Sabbatini told a news conference on the eve of the Players' Championship of Europe near Hamburg. "I don't believe there are guys that are doing that." Another one of the favourites for the Players' title this week, former winner and world 22 Niclas Fasth of Sweden, said he had only "heard rumours and not about the European Tour". more...

I love Gary Player. Midget done good. But Sabbatini has a reasonable point. Even if Gary tells what he knows behind closed doors only.
I think it's a non-story in the end. I can't imagine what drugs would help a golfer.

But the pros are trying to keep their trajectory down.

Sabbatini is engaged in the same sort of 'Shoot The Messenger' diversion that we've all come to love so much in Post Modern Amerka'. Whether Player names names or not, The PGA Tour is being stupid on this issue and practically inviting abuse. If you think some guy that's faced with a choice between selling insurance and filling in on the Billy Joe Bob Pay To Play Tour Of SW Bumf*ck or possibly staying close enough to the top 125 or 150 to keep playing a couple more years isn't looking at EVERY option including a few performance enhancers, you're kidding yourself. There's NO downside: You can't get caught, and a potential tremendous upside: You don't have to get a job.

Not sure what it was you said there but I do often kid myself so you're probably on to something.
Upon further reflection I am unable to shed my opinion that performance enhancing drugs do *fudge* all for golfers.

Beta blockers. I don't need no drugs to calm me well maybe...yes I do. I can't imagine 'roids or any 'tother stuff helping.

At least one top tier professional golf tour seems to feel that there is enough of a possibility of use of performance enhancers that they are instituting a testing policy effective next year.
This would suggest, at least, that somebody thinks somebodies doing something, and obtaining some measure of gain by it.
Aske seems well versed in these kinds of things...

Athletes drugging up in the news are home run hitters, HOF linemen, Tour de France winners/leaders and so forth. If there are indeed golfers on the dope it'll be interesting to see if it's Tiger, Phil, Vijay and so forth or if it's guys at 300 or beyond in the world rankings.
I think they'll be just a few, if any, and they'll be in the latter group. The world's best will not be involved. This would suggest to me that performing enhancing drugs do not enhance golfers' performance.
We'll see. So far it's wild rumors, conjecture and speculation. To my knowledge, not one professional golfer has been named.

Depends on what one's definition of performing enhancing might be. And then by what means do you illegally enhance that performance. Personally I think you're all on "the" dope.

I'm inclined to agree with this. It's not illegal in this sport, until someone says it is. Right now it is no different than using the best equipment, hiring the best swing coach, sport psychologist, physical trainer, etc. Having said that, I'm not sure how HGH type drugs would benefit a golfers overall game. (as opposed to the clear advantages in say, football.) I've been rubbing The Cream on for years, and it ain't done *feces* for my game.
