Dude had a failed first marriage that, looking back, he can see was a huge mistake. Young Guy (fellow community member, mind you) posts that's about to propose, says nothing about how excited he is, that he's met the love of his life, or any *feces* like that -- just chatters about a diamond ring and asks people to "talk me out of it". Dude wants to make sure that Young Guy about to take the plunge is sure, so Young Guy doesn't make the same mistake.
Maybe not the best written post, but I can't get too bent over that.

I think that the young guy is just kidding about the "talk me out of this". That he's planning this far in advance to propose is worth something. It's not like he and his girlfriend just used EPT and said "Oh *feces*! I guess we're getting married." |

[Acknowledging FGI content at golfhos] Going against my general commitment to keep over there over there and over here over here: I think in most cases when a man says things like "talk me out of getting married," it's generally understood to be a joke. Hell, yesterday I defined marriage to a coworker as "the time in a man's life when he loves a woman enough to give up everything he enjoys" which couldn't possibly be further from the truth. I think Dude in question never misses an opportunity to tell anyone who will listen about his failed first marriage, to assume or assert that his morals, values, and religion are or should be universal, and to generally post self pity under the guise of wanting to help others learn from his pathetic mistakes. There is a common aspect to each of his unusually high number of bad human encounters, interactions, and relationships that he seemingly doesn't recognize. No, we lived in Oklahoma City, but I loved the river walk and the Alamo. I had a good friend who went to Hawaii for two weeks on his honeymoon and came back just as white as he left. If something like that happened at my club, that room would empty fast....except for the psychiatrists, who would stick around long enough to hand you their business card. |
