I've heard that Conway would ad lib this stuff. They would go through rehearsal, he'd hit all the lines and the numbers, and then come taping time BANG, here he comes with some bizarreness that would just kill everybody.
I remember watching that show on Sunday nights at 10:00pm, and I never realized until I was much, much older how absolutely hysterical it was.
