Anyone ever done a suicide/elimination football pool?
« on: September 13, 2007, 10:08:09 PM » |

I thought it might be fun to have an NFL suicide/elimination contest here if we can get enough people in. No entry fee, but I'll figure out a prize.
I don't think we can get it together in time for this weekend, but maybe we can start it next week.
A couple of questions: - do you usually go straight up or with spreads? - does single or double elimination work better?

Here's the gist: The object of Yahoo! Sports Survival Football is to be the last Active member of your individual group. In order to accomplish this goal, a user must correctly pick the winner of one professional football game each week. But, to make this somewhat simple task more difficult, each user can only pick each professional football team once during the season (this does not carry across multiple groups). If a correct selection is made, the user will remain Active for the following week. If an incorrect selection is made, that user will be Eliminated. http://help.yahoo.com/l/u...vival/rules/rules-04.htmlA survivor pool (also known as a suicide, knockout, or elimination pool) revolves around the notion of staying "alive" on a week-to-week basis. Each week, you pick one team that you feel will win that week. If your team wins, you survive to play again the following week. If your team loses, you're done. (Ties can be considered either a win or a loss, depending on what the pool organizer sets.) Another wrinkle is that you're only allowed to pick each team only once per season. Also, some pools are double-elimination, meaning that you're eliminated on your second incorrect pick instead of your first. The pool winner is the last person alive in the pool. It sounds easy, but is actually quite difficult! http://myhomeowners.com/faq/

There's a huge, highly illegal, suicide pool that runs somewhere in NJ. It's $300 per entry, and there are a couple thousand people in it. I did it three years ago and didn't get far (remember when the Packers hadn't lost at home to the Bears in like a million years? I, and about half the pool, had the Pack, and that was week two). Anyway, my buddy and two of his friends won it about four years ago. (They actually split the pot with another team. Once there are ten or less entries left, if everyone agrees to split the pot then they can). These guys wound up meeting some guy they've never met at Roy Rogers on the NJ Turnpike where they were given a shoe box with $260,000 dollars in it. If anyone wants in next year let me know.

My buddy wanted me to play in one a few years ago. Something like 25 bucks. All you have to to each week is pick one team to not lose. Apparently harder than it looks.

Cool, I'll see if I can find a site to track this that allows you to start midseason. I'll post something early next week, so there's no confusion about the games this weekend.

Week 3 will have several of the bottom-dwellers playing each other, which will make it tough for our opening round. Cleveland at Oakland Miami at Jets Minnesota at KC St. Louis at TB
