Big Babies Under Attack

This is interesting.  I'd heard about adults still living with their parents in Japan, but didn't realize it occurred in Italy, too.

Uproar over tax break for Italy's "big babies"

ROME (Reuters) - Italy's economy minister has sparked uproar by offering "big babies" a tax break if they let go of their mother's apron strings and left home.

More than a third of Italian men over the age of 30 live at home with their parents, a phenomenon blamed on sky-high apartment rents and bleak job prospects as much as a liking for mamma's cooking.

Economy Minister Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa offered to come to the rescue with a 1,000 euro (693 pound) tax break for 20- and 30-something Italians who rent.

He said the move was aimed at "bamboccioni", which evokes images of clumsy, overgrown male babies.

"We must send those we call 'big babies' out of the house," the minister told a Senate hearing on the 2008 draft budget.

"With the budget we'll help young people who don't marry and still live with their parents get out of the house."

I haven't stayed over for the night at my parent's house more than a handful of times since I graduated high school.  And a couple of those times were with them out of town.  I did give them a few Christmas Eves though.

My mom would cry with joy if my brother were to move back home.   (If I wanted to move back home, those wouldn't be tears of joy  Grin)

My brother is constanly being kicked out of home by his girlfriend (that is a whole new different thread).
He goes straight home to Mum, who usually has a lamb roast waiting for him! Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

The good thing about getting old, is that you can hit the ball out of sight.

Over a third of Italian men over 30 still live at home?  Shoot, if my son (21) is still at home in 9 years, I'll be begging Jules to adopt me & let me sleep on the couch!

Some mothers are strange when it comes to their son's and I think my mother is one of them. There grown adult son's will always and forever be their little boy, no matter how old they are!!! Huh?

My 35 year old brother has spent roughly 32 years living at home...it drove my Irish father crazy, but my Italian mother loves having her baby home.

I left home at 17.  Other than the prospect of staying somewhere rent/mortgage free, I could not fathom it.  I don't have a home to go back to anyway.
