If you've ever had that feeling where you just want to pack up and head away, move into the wilderness, live off the land, and die young this is the movie for you.

I really liked it, beautiful cinematography, they filmed in almost every place this kid traveled to, the panoramic wide angle shots were just amazing. Eagles and deers, wolves and bears, mountain ranges, good but sad story, he only made one mistake.

Seamus gives it one thumb up.

Thumbs Up

I don't mean to be callous, but I've read the magazine article that begat the book that begat the movie.

I also used to work with one of the guys that found him.

This is a direct quote from him: It takes a special kind of idiot to starve to death in Alaska in August.

Catch this one the next time it rolls around on PBS:

LOL, can't link it.

Google 'D!ck Proenneke' or 'Alone In The Wilderness'.

I don't want to spoil too much, but he did something wrong that quickened the starvation process, since going in you have to know he died the story itself becomes so much bigger than that.

We won't spoil the movie, because the story really isn't about his death but his life.

Lots of people walk into the woods every year in Alaska and are never heard from again. This guy just happened to get found.

Suffice it to say that with even a minimal amount of due diligence, he should have walked out with no problem at all.

He did.

He did not. He did not even have the park map that shows the bridge he could have crossed in July a mile away from where he tried to cross.

Failing that, there was a fully stocked cabin 6 miles away also clearly marked on a Park Service map.

I still have a map of Denali Park somewhere, next time we play golf I'll show it to you.

No, didn't read the book. The article is available here:

Too late for me for that, although I suppose that's a relative statement.

LOL, I'm not saying that, so I'll apologize right now if that's how it came off.
