so the hope for the future is pretty bleak if this is really considered earth-shattering (and turns out to be repeatable)

2.88 is somewhere very close to current conventional petroleum EROEI (2-8 depending on oil field).   so ... ignoring all costs associated with an infrastructure overhaul,  the net cost per unit of energy would effectively be the same.  although, at least we wouldn't probably ever face the 'peak' problem.
