Utah is depressing
« on: November 29, 2007, 01:58:36 PM » |

I'm sure our happy-go-lucky friends Uisce and spacey have nothing to worry about.! http://www.startribune.com/462/story/1579548.htmlThe darkness of winter descends, snow falls and the mercury plummets. Is this a recipe for depression? Apparently quite the opposite. In a nationwide ranking on depression and suicide rates released Wednesday, most states in the Upper Midwest ranked among the blissfully happy -- or, at least, the least depressed -- in the top 10. Minnesota was No. 6, below Iowa at No. 4. Those absolutely giddy South Dakotans topped the list. North Dakota ranked No. 9. Wisconsin was a bit morose, at No. 30. ........................................The most depressed state in the country? Utah, followed by West Virginia and Kentucky. http://www.mentalhealtham...rica.net/go/state-ranking

Without getting all P&R about this... well, you can't without getting all P&R about this.
The marginalization of women by our predominant culture has so much to do with it it's not even worth talking about any other reasons. The Sisters pop more valium than pretty much any other demographic in the country (hearsay, I have no solid stats, could be full of *feces*, but I don't think so, I really don't think so.)

Well I gre up in Illinois (#8) and now live in Missouri (#44).
So I apparently had a very blissful childhood into a young adult, but am now beginning to trend towards depression. Let me know when ya'll start to see the signs - I'll move to Hawaii.

If they'd used prozac rather than valium, they could probably drop their suicide rate significantly

One needs to also take into account the culture of keeping up a cheerful appearance and never letting the cracks show. Utahns as a group can be suspicious of seeking professional help for legitimate psychiatric and psychological conditions, preferring instead to seek counsel from their ecclesiastical leaders and believing faith is the cure for anything that may ail you. I've seen it happen too many times that people with serious demons refuse to acknowledge or treat them for fear that it might indicate that sometimes faith just quite simply ain't enough. As for the pills, I think a lot of it has to do with marginalization of women, as pointed out, but I think it also has to do with the high expectations placed upon them to meet a certain level of performance as a houskeeper/cook/matriarch/baby manufacturer/slave/what have you, all while maintaining that Jello-y sweet persona that their husbands and sisters expect and demand. There's a good reason we're near the top (if not at the top) of the nation in meth abuse as well. This is all simply my opinion. I have no empirical evidence to back any of it.
