Strong Opinions/Emotions Re: the NE Patriots
« on: December 10, 2007, 12:57:17 PM » |

I've read more than one person say he hates the Patriots. It seems like everyone either rubs himself while dreaming of them or loathes them. Why is that?
I've heard folks say they hate the Steelers, mostly because of the media play they get (a phenomenon I call Tiger Woods Syndrome) or that they seem to have a strong fan base everywhere. Is that it for the Patriots as well, or is there something more?

The only team in the NFL I truly loathe is the Cowboys. I don't hate the Pats, but I have a tendency to root against "dynasty" teams, and they generally fall under this category for me these days.

to me it's the result of the synergism of the emetic fanboyism that permeates bahstin sports culture and the 'luck' the league officials (on and off the field) have afforded them throughout the 'run' of the last few years

I agree with spacey on the "dynasty" teams. And I don't know what it is but I just don't like Belichick. Seems like a real arrogant prick, more so than most NFL coaches. So I won't mind seeing them get beat this year.
But I don't hate the Pats. In fact, I respect the way the front office has been able to build and manage the team under the cap.

For me it starts with Jan. 19th, 2002.
Then you have a team that somehow manages to nip out big wins - taking three Super Bowls by three points each. That's a credit to them but it just seems undeserving somehow. I have a hard time calling a team that scrapes though like that a dynasty. Perhaps unfair but there it is.
Their fans... holy cow. Chip on the shoulder crowd if ever. Mortally wounded if someone doesn't think the Patriots are the greatest team ever. I happen to think this year's team just might be that but I'm not ready to hand them the #1 Dynasty title just yet.
But it really comes down to Belichick. He's an arrogant prick and his smug attitude seems to be contagious. He topped it this year by appearing offended he was called out for cheating. The cheating is one thing; the complete (perceived??) lack of remorse is something else. I wouldn't let him in my house nor near my children.

funny enough, cheating incident swept under the rug aside, he is what i like most* about the pats. he is arrogant, and he blatantly gives the big FU to the league and the media. stick it to the man!

It's not that hard to figure out. A quick top 10:
10. Jealousy 9. Overexposure 8. Commentators unable to talk of them without touching their privates. 7. The cheating thing 6. All the Patriots fans who didn't seem to exist during the rest of the franchise's history are now here to rub it in our faces. 5. The success of the Red Sox as well. I actually rooted for them to break the "curse" and now I have to hear about it nonstop. (My company is owned by a Boston management company). I'd like to see a nuclear holocaust occur at Fenway (assuming one just HAS to happen somewhere). 4. Randy Moss seems like a real *bunghole*. 3. Tom Brady and his wayward sperms, he seems like a real *bunghole*. 2. Rodney Harrison seems like a real *bunghole*. 1. Bill Belichick seems like a real *bunghole*. 1a. When you're on top everyone guns for you. It's human nature, especially when you are a real *bunghole*.

I just have a bad taste in my mouth for bahstin fans from the 04 Series when the Sox beat the Cards. They were arrogant and beligerent. Individually I've gotten along with Boston fans, but you get a few of them together - step back, its an exercise in aggression.
I don't 'hate' the Pats, but would not cry if they lost (may even laugh a little).

The Patriots exist. I'm sick of hearing about and seeing them on the highlights. My team is teh sukk this year, and probably next as well.
I will watch something else if the Patriots are the only game on the tube. Even paint drying.

When I was growing up, I wanted to be Warren Coolidge from The White Shadow. Now that I'm older, I want to be Tom Brady. It could happen.
