Have never watched either in their entirety. I know about HAL, and that's about it. Oh, that and the theme music with the monkeys goin' medieval.

Kubrick blows. Mostly anyway.
2001 is a great movie at about half the length. As it stands it's mind-numbingly boring. 2010 is entirely forgettable including whoever the hell directed it. Tough for sci-fi fan to say these things but at least the books are good.

a) I saw both in high school. I liked 2010, but not 2001. My physics teacher mocked me for not appreciating the brilliance of 2001.
b) 2010 > Clive > 2001
