Outraged and Incensed
« on: January 08, 2008, 07:53:21 AM » |

So I'm an editorial junky. NTTAWWT. These two words are used A LOT in letters to the editor. A LOT mind you. Do you know anyone in real life who runs around outraged and incensed about anything? Or do we perhaps pop on the melodrama hat when we send a note off to the paper? (Or post on forums/blogs for that matter. ) I'm not sure I've ever been outraged or incensed in my life. I do see things that would justify these emotions if I were closer to the event. Although it doesn't work like this for me I can possibly understand someone rising to this emotional state over a heinous crime involving children, genocide, dogfighting or the NFL playoffs. That's not what is destroying fragile temperaments these days though - people are outraged and incensed that some other faceless netizen expressed an opinion differing from their own. Seriously... have a Happy Meal folks. These people outrage and incense me.

Please note I'm not equating Outraged and Incensed with 2i's Shock, Horror and Disgust. He's allowed. Different animal entirely.

I was incensed a lot, but that was back in college when I smoked too much weed. It did help to mask the odor.

On Topic: I completely agree, and applaud you for speaking out. Makes me equally as crazy seeing the local unwashed being interviewed on the news, trying to speak over their head. Just talk. The more you attempt to sound well spoken, the more you do not. Ec specialy when they interview high school kids. Almost irony.surrenders.

............Although it doesn't work like this for me I can possibly understand someone rising to this emotional state over a heinous crime involving children..............
The past few years (funny it coincides with having kids) I feel a pit inside my stomach when I read/see news stories about bad things being perpetrated on children. I'm quite certain it's outrage. But I take a deep breath, shake my head and move on. Outraged and incensed is no way to go through life. But venting a little once in a while can be therapeutic.

That's sadness and a degree of despair for me. If it were to happen to someone close to me it would rise to something else. But like I said, I understand those feelings when it comes to those issues. I think the people who are outraged and incensed about County Commissioners getting away with parking violations minimize outrage and incense for when they are really needed.
