For most people, $300 will probably cover their credit card payment for one month. I don't know if people will necessarily spend this money, especially if there's talk of a recession. I think people will be more inclined to pay down debt rather than to spend more money. Ironically, the only people that would probably just spend the money are those that don't really need the rebate in the first place.
If the government wants to stimulate the economy, maybe these rebates should come in the form of Best Buy or Target gift cards.

that $70B in corporate assistance will sure help too. that, and allowing the mortgage co's to expand their acquisition range up to $700k instead of $415k

Granted, its a bit rediculous, but..... Most workers would receive rebates of $600 each, or $1,200 per couple. Families with children would receive an additional payment of $300 per child. |

Much of the stimulus will come in the form of tax rebates to both businesses and individual tax payers. According to reports from The Associated Press and The Washington Post, individuals earning less than $75,000 would receive a $300 rebate. Families -- households with children -- earning less than $150,000 would receive $600, and $300 for each child up to two.
Many economists have said that among plans to stimulate the economy, favoring low- and middle-income earners is the most likely to have immediate results. Low-income earners remain less likely to save. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that many of the tax rebates in 2003 went toward savings, not spending. LINKSources on Capitol Hill and at the Treasury Department said congressional and White House negotiators agreed upon checks of $600 per individual and $1,200 per couple who paid income tax and who filed jointly. People who did not pay federal income taxes but who had earned income of more than $3,000 would get checks of $300 per individual or $600 per couple. A Democratic aide and Republican aide said there will be an additional amount per child, which could be in the neighborhood of $300.
Those who earn up to $75,000 individually or up to $150,000 as a couple will be eligible for the payments, said Republican and Democratic sources familiar with the tentative deal. Checks could be in taxpayers' mailboxes by June, according to an Associated Press report. LINK |

AP says: Pelosi, D-Calif., agreed to drop increases in food stamp and unemployment benefits during a Wednesday meeting in exchange for gaining rebates of at least $300 for almost everyone earning a paycheck, including low-income earners who make too little to pay income taxes. Individuals and couples who pay income tax would receive rebates of $600-$1,200, and more if they have children.
Under the tentative plan, families with children would receive an additional $300 per child, according to a senior House aide who outlined the deal on condition of anonymity in advance of formal adoption of the package. Rebates would only go to people earning below a certain income cap, likely individuals earning $75,000 or less and couples with incomes of $150,000 or less.
Workers would have to have earned at least $3,000 in 2007 to receive the rebates, the officials said.
The rebate part of the plan would cost about $100 billion, aides said. |
