ABC gets one thing wrong
« on: February 26, 2008, 07:05:43 AM » |

http://techdirt.com/artic.../20080224/231143340.shtmlhttp://www.nytimes.com/20...p;emc=rss&oref=sloginAbout a year and a half ago, an executive at Disney-owned ABC-TV talked about how the network was experimenting with ways to block people from fast forwarding through commercials. The exec in question even claimed that commercial-skipping wasn't even a very important feature for most DVR-owners. Despite the widespread criticism of this statement, it appears that ABC is now preparing to test that theory. In association with cable company Cox, it's testing a new video-on-demand feature that won't let viewers fast forward through commercials.

I want you to invest millions of dollars in technology that would allow me access to a product you have spent millions of dollars on any time I want, as much as I want, and I want it all free, free, free, without any recognition of the value of that service. It is after all my God given constitutional right to get all that stuff under the provisions of my choosing! Don't send unsolicited commercials to my private cell phone, that should result in incurring a charge. Other than that, is it too much to ask to sit through a little Maxwell Coffee, and Madge soaking in Palm-Olive for the entertainment the are providing on the episode of LOST?

I have Cox cable so I can't wait for this. Not that I watch the on-demand stuff much if at all anyways.

Dude, is it 1980 in Minnesota? We live in a changing world. Technology trumps technology. ABC is tuggin' on Superman's cape on this one. They can't win this battle. Besides, if I can't watch the Superbowl at church then *fudge* everyone I say.

I don't get your argument, however.
TV used to be free. It came through the air. You watched one of four shows and you watched the commercials broadcast during that show. Roughly 25 years ago they came out with pay TV. You got to watch this pay TV stuff without commercials. It was great. Oh yeah, and MTV played rock-and-roll videos. Then somehow the lines became blurred. Now you get to watch 16 minutes of commercials every hour on channels you've bought. Seemingly more in some cases although I've never applied the stopwatch. Some bright guys said screw that and invented ways to get around it. Obviously the powers that be have determined doing so isn't illegal. Now half the country PVRs. Admittedly, those people know far less about erectile dysfunction than they should. Now ABC wants to put the genie back in the bottle. I go so far as to say fair enough - but only on your OTA channel. I'll watch your commercials there if you take them off every pay channel owned by ABC/ESPN/Disney/etc. Dealio?

Just this morning, on another site, I was told that "techdirt is for retards." Truer words ... ? Never been there before. The link was on a tech blog I read. So no opinion. Am I allowed to think it's a stupid idea if the story also resides on the NY Times site?

if you want the right to enjoy your technology as you see fit, you better prepare to immigrate yet again. Scandahoovia? I got a great new tuque for Christmas so I'm game. It's not about rights. It's about consumer demand. Nobody's going to sign up for this thing. There are two main reasons people utilize 'on demand' programming. One, they want to watch shows at other than their regularly scheduled broadcast time. Two, they want to skip commercials because they (a) don't enjoy them and (b) want to watch programs in 3/4 the time.

Ok, cool. I guess I can see the Sirius/XM radio type argument. I don't subscribe to any of those services, and I subscribe to Cable basically for the reception clarity. I'm basically one step ahead of "old space" *fudge*in' sell out. From my perspective (current position) I don't see it as such a bad compromise for the entertainment I am provided. If I have a significant technological entertainment investment, I suppose my attitude could change.

fortunately, it's not as if this 'disney' korpration has any sway with the leaders of the hardware cartel for next gen hi-def home media, or has any history of abusing content/owner rights in the past . i for one know they have my best interests at heart, and i welcome with greatful open arms their decisions of what's best for me, and i will watch their content when/where/how they want me to!

Beside, commercial breaks are invaluable for those who need to get up to get a beer, and bang out a heater. FTW.
