Good read.  The article mentions an Apple patent tying an anti-theft mechanism with the recharger.  Interesting idea.

Actually the battery replacement isn't that difficult to DIY.  Wink Smiley  I will cede the price issue after playing around with my daughter's Sandisk even though I still think the click wheel interface on the iPod is fantastic. I also think that iTunes is slick and easy to use but with Amazon now offering MP3's it's going to be harder to justify the upcharge for an iPod. Just my humble opinion.

Replacing the battery yourself is the way to go. It's half the price of getting someone else to do it, and very easy to do.
